Why did they reject? And why AH-1W not AH-64 Apache?

They pointed out that 145 USA Marine Cobra's are actively used on Afghanistan. Transfering 12 of them to Turkey may create some weakness to the effectiness of operations so They rejected. That is what They revealed into public but I don't know whether It is the real reason or not...

Actually Turkey requested aprox. 30 SuperCobra attack helicopters as a stopgap solution until T-129 completed but Instead of SuperCobra, USA strongly offered AH-64 Apaches instead of Cobra's. This offer is rejected by Turkey because While development of T-129 is continuing and Army operates Bell Cobra helicopters, 3th type attack helicopter would have created logistic nightmare, new training, new maintenance workload...etc No need to mention How expensive Apache's operational and maintenance costs...

I think the best Hel for fighting terrorists is MD Helicopters MD 500, effective and lethal, extreme maneuverability and agility, fast. Jordan considered replasing it's fleet of AH-1 W with them:

Atak is specially developed to perform the operations in "hot-high" zones (Turkey's high mountainous region in South-East)... It is the main demand of Turkish army to choose an attack copter...

T129 is designed to meet the demanding requirements of the Turkish Army. It is optimized to perform at “hot & high” environments with considerable fire-power.

About Armour, Most probably, Atak has Nurol's Fazıl®-H helicopter armour.

Fazıl®-H type armors are supplied especially for helicopters with high endurance and special joint systems.

Fazıl®-H type armors are used as floor and side armors for general purpose helicopters like UH-1, UH-60 or Cougar and also offers special designs which can be used as crew seats in AH-1 attack helicopters.Engines , radome or transmission areas could be armored if requested.

So technically you intend to use these helos against terrorists holed up in high mountainous areas?

It is similar to a requirement our military has.

Altitude combat is a serious problem and especially with helicopters.

It is very interesting to see how come gunship makers never looked into this seriously until a couple of years back.

To realize How difficult area Turkey is fighting against PKK, Watch this operation video please... It is almost impossible to approach the terorists with passing rocky and hilly canyons seperated with rivers. Soldiers are firing the bullets from mountain to mountain. That's why Atak helicopters have to provide one of the best hot-high performance in its class...

At past, Turkish surveillance and Turkish Attack helicopter tender were two different concept but With a strategic desicion, Two tender was connected and described as Turkish surveillance and attack helicopter tender. I mean T-129 Atak is not only a combat helicopter, but also a surveillance/recognisance helicopter.
