BEIRUT (Reuters) - Opposition activists said Syrian forces killed more than 30 people on Saturday when they fired a mortar bomb into a funeral procession in Damascus for a man who died in shelling 24 hours earlier.

They said amateur video footage, posted on a website, showed the moment the bomb hit the crowd. Another video showed the aftermath - grey smoke filling the air before clearing to show bodies.

The body of the man who activists said was killed a day before lay wrapped in a white shroud on the ground. Moments earlier it was being held above the head of mourners as they marched down the street.

The footage showed the bodies of those activists said had been killed in the explosion, some barely recognizable and others with limbs missing.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll was likely to rise due to the number injured.

The Syrian authorities severely restrict the media, making it extremely difficult to verify such reports. Activists film attacks by government forces who have been trying for 16 months to crush an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The United Nations has said more than 10,000 people have been killed by Assad's forces, while Syria has said at least 2,600 members of the military and security forces have been killed by what it calls foreign-backed "Islamist terrorists."

I love how when innocents die in a conflict where the US is involved, all the Americans and slave Indians scream collateral damage, but when it's in another country then it's the govts fault.

1) nobody knows if it was the govt

2) even if it was, it's a war and there's collateral damage.

@ those who actually care about the civilians: the quickest way to stop the deaths is to support the govt of the nation of Syria. The quicker the terrorists, rebels and the armed thugs put down their weapons, the quicker the war will end.

This is starting to get annoying, seriously. It can not be an excuse for bombing cities and killing civillians. It can not be an excuse for shooting at your neighbour's planes over international waters. So cut the crap.

Thats sounds like blackmailing to me. "If you want to stop the violence start supporting Assad, or else we keep killing", and you are calling us slaves. :undecided:

This is not how a responsible government operates.

And how responsible government operates? Let terrorists bomb and kill everyone freely? Responsible government persecutes such terrorists, and thats what Syria does.

As Abii said, unless terrorists stops their criminal activities, its asinine to demand for government not to fight armed gangs. No country in the World would agree to it.

No, a responsible government would listen to the demands of its people and hold a free and fair election. Sure take action against the armed rebels, but this indiscriminate and disproportionate retaliation from Assad's soldiers is killing way too many civilians.

Not every one who opposes Assad is a terrorist you know.

What you dont know, is that only minority opposes Assad, and majority supports him. Do you suggest Assad HAVE to listen of minority, and ignore majority? Just because West and Arabs want to see Assad gone, doesnt mean anything if majority of Syrians thinks otherwise.

That said, Assad is transitioning country to democracy, recently was voting for the new constitution, parliamentary elections, etc. West/Arabs and their funded terrorists dont care about it - since their only goal is complete removal of a popular leader like Assad and installing puppet regime, by whatever means.
