NEW DELHI: Hailing India's position on the fight against ISIS militants in West Asia, Syria today said it does not have any information about reports of involvement of a small group of Indian youth with the dreaded terror group in strife-torn Iraq and in its own soil.

Syrian Ambassador Riad Kamel Abbas also appreciated the "Muslim society" in India as the best in the world and said India can play a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability in many conflict zones.

"We do not have any real information about it. We have no confirmation," he said when asked about reports that a small group of radicalised Indian youths may be fighting alongside ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

"We highly appreciate the Islamic society here in India. This is the best Islamic society in the world," he said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had told a court here last month that Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives were following the footsteps of ISIS to create a situation in India similar to the one prevailing in Iraq and Syria.

Syria has been grappling with a fierce civil war for last couple of years with ISIS posing a serious threat to President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Supporting India's bid to become a member of the UN Security Council, Abbas also accused US of not doing anything to contain ISIS and suggested that the American administration may be behind its emergence.

Welcoming India's position on addressing terror activities in the Gulf region, the Syrian envoy said the UN has failed to perform its duty by coming under influence of the US.

"We appreciate India's position on Syria. We appreciate India's position on containing terror. India can play an important role in ensuring peace in many areas," he said while adding that Syria and India have cooperation in many areas including in security.

The envoy also alleged that spy agencies from some European countries were trying to destabilise Assad regime.

India has been maintaining that it was not going to join "any coalition" in the ongoing fight against the ISIS group in West Asia but agreed to work with the US to deal with the "major issue" of flight of radicalised people to that region for terror strikes.

Asked about Syria's ties with India, Abbas said both countries have been cooperating in various areas.

He said Syria appreciates India's position of not getting involved in the US-led coalition and termed it as a "good policy".

Severely critical of the US and Israel, the envoy claimed that any effort to topple the Assad government will lead to "bigger" problem and said Syria's "allies" like Russia and China will never allow such a move.

He also accused Saudi Arabia and Turkey of trying to destabilise Syria.

"Alliance of Syria like Russia, China and Iran will not allow Syrian government to fall. It will not be allowed," he said.

The US-led coalition is carrying out air strikes against Islamic State militants, who have seized large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The ISIS have been involved in mass killings including beheading of soldiers and journalists.

@Syrian Lion - We In India highly sympathize with syrian current condition and India repeatedly denied US's request of getting involved over there. What is it like in Syria regarding India. How do they view India in general? Are the feelings mutual or are they not bothered since we are half way across the world.

Which Syria? There are roughly 3 Syrias now.

The Alawaite group is favorable to India. The FSA does not bother.

And the Islamic State wants to occupy India. And ISIS has the mass support. So you must have got the answer.
Hint: Don't go around searching for good terrorist/bad terrorists.

Firstly...I dont see ISIS as a country. Next, the other two factions are I guess not anti-India...so it's not a question of good terrorist or bad terrorist....it's a question of political interests and where India stands in that equation.

India does not stand anywhere. Alawaite Syria is dependant on Russia. The other factions are not. We don't figure in the equation.

...which is alarming. Coz, ISIS's presence in India is already being felt. And the environment is ripe considering the neighborhood. So, Isnt it high time to get in contact with the opposite faction of ISIS and start working towards our interests? Remember...we still have our nurses in their captivity!!

With any luck they will be killed quickly. Anything else is going to need a miracle...positive that is.

India has a considerable support base for the ISIS. This much I can assure you. And there is no real opposition to ISIS. Kurds to some extent. The others are not anti ISIS, just that they want to retain power and ISIS is not willing to concede any.

The Kurds can be helped, but they are running out of numbers in a hostile neighborhood. The relatively secular Kurds are not seen in a positive light by any of their neighbors.

Werent they all rescued?
46 have been released. I have heard some are still being held captive. Me too want anybody to confirm this.

Hmm.. thanks for info. So, can India and Russia step in and help the kurds with money and ammunition? Maybe no direct boots on ground...but supplying weapons should be considered atleast? What is Iran's stand on this?

Our Muslim community is always our pride. We are proud about them.
Spot on!

"The patriotism of Indian Muslims cannot be questioned", asserted PM Modi in his first ever international interview since assuming office.

"Indian Muslims will live for India and die for India. Al Qaeda is delusional to think Indian Muslims will dance to its tunes," Modi told CNN.

We are all Indians first. Hindu, Muslim Sikh, Christians later!
