Pro-AL activists vandalise RUET VC office

Rajshahi University, Jul 5 (bdnews24.com) — Leaders and activists of ruling Awami League's front organisations have vandalised the chamber of the Vice Chancellor of the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

The vandalism took place around 12pm on Thursday at VC Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury's room, but he was not in the room at that time.

Witnesses said around 100 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, Metropolitan Swechchasebak League, Metropolitan Chhatra League and Chhatra League Ward Number 30 unit were seen at the scene during the attack.

The leaders include Metropolitan Swechchasebak League General Secretary W Sarker, Metropolitan Chhatra League General Secretary Ekramul Bari Titu and Chhtra League Ward Number 30 unit President Abul Kalam Azad.

Leaders of Chhatra League, student front of Awami League, in their defence for attacking and vandalising the VC's room said Sirajul Karim has a 'soft corner' for the opposition student fronts, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir, an allegation he declined immediately.

W Sarker told bdnews24.com: "Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal (student and youth fronts of main opposition BNP) led by the former Rajshahi Mayor held a fruit festival on Tuesday on the RUET campus even when all kind of political activities are banned inside the campus. But the VC did not object to their programme."

He said leaders of the ruling party front organisations went to the VC's office on Wednesday and Thursday to protest against his role in the event, but he was not in his office.

Sarker said: "We met him today, but he asked us to come on another day. Then some of us vandalised 'a little' out of frustration."

RUET Chhatra League Convenor Harun-ur-Rashid, however, told bdnews24.com that no students of the university were connected to the incident.

He said the VC dilly-dallies to permit Chhatra League to hold any programme on the campus. "But Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir and other organisations hold their programmes uninterrupted."

Confirming the vandalism, Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman told bdnews24.com: "We went to the scene right after we were notified. But the attackers left before we could arrive."

An investigation to find out the responsible for the incident was going on, he said, adding no one was detained until Thursday evening.


Reacting to the allegation, VC Sirahul Karim told bdnews24.com that he did not give any permission to the opposition front organisations to hold any programme on the campus. "The allegation of having a soft corner for them is fictitious and baseless."

"I went to my native home in Chapainawabganj on Thursday and returned around 3pm."

The VC said: "I was informed about the vandalism by my assistant over phone. The damage cost might be around Tk 25 lakh."

সিলেটের ঐতিহ্যবাহী এমসি কলেজের পুড়ে যাওয়া ছাত্রাবাস দেখতে গিয়ে কেঁদে ফেলেছেন শিক্ষামন্ত্রী নূরুল ইসলাম নাহিদ। সংবাদপত্রে তার এই কান্নার ছবিকে স্বাভাবিকভাবে নেয়নি সাধারণ মানুষ। তাদের বক্তব্য হচ্ছে, শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর এখানে কান্নার কিছু নেই। তার দলের ক্যাডাররা কলেজটি পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছে। তিনি এদের বিরুদ্ধে কোনো ব্যবস্থা নেননি। এই ব্যর্থতার দায় শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর। শুধু এমসি কলেজই নয়, সারা দেশের শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে এখন অরাজকতা চলছে। বুয়েটের ইতিহাসে যে অরাজকতা হয়নি, এখন তা হচ্ছে। তেমনি জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে দলীয় ভিসি ও শিক্ষকরা এবং ছাত্রলীগ ক্যাডাররা তাণ্ডব চালিয়েছে। এ পরিস্থিতিতে শিক্ষামন্ত্রীকে কান্নার মাধ্যমে দায়িত্ব শেষ করলে হবে না। ব্যর্থতার জন্য পদত্যাগ করতে হবে।
দেশের প্রায় সব সংবাদপত্র, অনলাইন ও টেলিভিশন চ্যানেলে প্রচারিত ও প্রকাশিত তথ্য মতে ওই ঘটনার জন্য দায়ী ছাত্রলীগ। শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর উপস্থিতিতেই একজন ছাত্রলীগ নেতা তাকে ও অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিতকে জানিয়েছেন, সিলেট মহানগর আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা অ্যাডভোকেট রণজিত্ গ্রুপের ক্যাডার ছাত্রলীগের সিলেট জেলা সভাপতি পঙ্কজ পুরকায়স্থ, সরকারি কলেজ সাবেক সভাপতি দেবাংশু দাস মিঠু, ছাত্রলীগ নেতা এস আর রুমেলসহ শতাধিক বখাটে ছাত্রলীগ নামধারী ওই ছাত্রাবাসে আগুন দিয়েছে। ছাত্রলীগের জেলা সভাপতি পঙ্কজ পুরকায়স্থ স্বগৌরবে ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন, ছাত্রাবাস পুড়িয়ে এমসি কলেজ ক্যাম্পাস শিবিরমুক্ত করা হয়েছে। শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর সঙ্গে অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিতও গিয়েছেন ছাত্রাবাস পরিদর্শনে। তিনি ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন, ‘এ ঘটনা যারা ঘটিয়েছে তারা যে দলেরই হোক, তাদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হবে। তাদের রক্ষা নাই।’ কিন্তু বাস্তবে আমরা কী দেখছি। ঘটনার পরপরই এমসি কলেজ শাখা ছাত্রলীগের কর্মী শওকত হোসেন বাদী হয়ে শাহপরান থানায় একটি মামলা দায়ের করেছেন। সেখানে প্রকৃত কোনো অপরাধীর নাম উল্লেখ না করে এমসি কলেজ ও পার্শ্ববর্তী সিলেট সরকারি কলেজ ছাত্রশিবিরের ৫০ নেতাকর্মীর নাম উল্লেখসহ অজ্ঞাত শিবির কর্মীদের আসামি করা হয়েছে। যদিও একই ঘটনায় ওই থানায় কারও নাম উল্লেখ না করে সাধারণ ডায়রি (জিড&#2495 করে কলেজ কর্তৃপক্ষ। শাহপরান থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওস&#2495 এনামুল মনোয়ার সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, সিলেট সরকারি কলেজ শাখা ছাত্রশিবিরের সভাপতি মামুন হোসাইনসহ ছাত্রশিবিরের ১৫ নেতাকর্মীকে আশপাশের বিভিন্ন মেস থেকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছে। এখান থেকেই পরিষ্কার ধারণা পাওয়া যাচ্ছে, প্রকৃত অপরাধীদের যে কিছুই হবে না। তাহলে শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর এই মায়াকান্না কেন? বরং জামায়াত শিবিরকে শায়েস্তা করার একটি মওকা পাওয়া গেছে ভেবে তো তার উল্লাস প্রকাশ করা উচিত ছিল।
সংবাদপত্রে প্রকাশিত সংবাদ অনুযায়ী বৃহস্পতিবার বিকালে এমসি কলেজ ছাত্রাবাসে আধঘণ্টা সময় ধরে স্মৃতিচারণ করেন মন্ত্রী। সেখানে তিনি অশ্রু বিসর্জন করেন। এরপর তার সঙ্গে যোগ দেন অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিতও।
শিক্ষামন্ত্রী হেঁটে হেঁটে চলতে থাকেন পুড়ে যাওয়া ছাত্রাবাসের প্রথম ব্লকের দিকে। ছাইয়ের ওপর দিয়ে হেঁটে এসে যখন থামলেন যে কক্ষে, সেটিকে এখন আর কক্ষ বলে চিনবার উপায় নেই, জ্বলেপুড়ে ছারখার। তবুও মন্ত্রী চিনে ফেললেন। চিনে বের করে ফেললেন ছাইয়ের ওপর ভাসতে থাকা কক্ষ নং ১০৩। সেখানেই থাকতেন মন্ত্রী। সংবাদিকদের বললেন, ‘আমি সত্যিই আবেগতাড়িত। বাংলাদেশের কোথাও এ ধরনের প্রতিষ্ঠান নেই। আমার দুর্ভাগ্য যে এরকম একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের পুড়ে যাওয়া দেখতে হলো।’ মন্ত্রী আরও বলেন, ‘আগুন লাগার পরই আমার কাছে একটি এসএমএস আসে। এসএমএসে লেখা ছিল, ‘আমি তোমার চেয়ে ২০ বছরের বড়। তুমি এখন মন্ত্রী হয়েছ জেনে আমি খুব খুশি হয়েছি। টেলিভিশনে দেখলাম এমসি কলেজ ছাত্রাবাস পুড়ে যাচ্ছে। আমি এই ছাত্রাবাসে ছিলাম, এক সময় যেমন তুমিও ছিলে। এই ছাত্রাবাস পুড়ে যাওয়ার আগে আমার মৃত্যু হলো না কেন।’
শিক্ষামন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘আমি আর কি বলব। ছাত্রদের থাকার জায়গা যারা পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছে। তারা কোনো মানুষের পর্যায়ে পড়ে না। এই শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ও ছাত্রাবাস সারা দেশের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি সুন্দর এবং এর চারপাশ ও মনোরম দৃশ্যাবলী দ্বিতীয় কোনো জায়গায় নেই। যারা পুড়িয়েছে, তারা কি মানুষ? এদের মনুষ্যত্ব বলতে কিছু নেই। কেউ রেহাই পাবে না। এজন্য সরকারিভাবে তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে।’
মন্ত্রীর চোখের পানি ফেলা প্রসঙ্গে দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করা হলে ব্রাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক ড. পিয়াস করিম বলেন, আমি জানি যারা অগ্নিকাণ্ড ঘটিয়েছে তাদের বিরুদ্ধে কিছু করার ক্ষমতা মন্ত্রীর নেই। কারণ তারা ক্ষমতাসীন দলের ছাত্র রাজনীতির সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত।
সহযোগী একটি জাতীয় দৈনিকের অনলাইনে পাঠক মাহমুদ খান মন্তব্য করেন, ‘ক্ষমতাসীন দলের ক্যাডার ছাত্র নামধারী রাবণদের হাতে গেছে শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো, তা কাঁদা ছাড়া কি আর করবেন।’ তিনি আরও বলেন, ‘আবেগী কান্নায় ভরপুর রাষ্ট্রের প্রধান নির্বাহী থেকে সবাই, ভেবেছিলাম এই লোকটা বোধহয় এর থেকে একটু আলাদা। না, তিনিও অন্তত ক্যামেরার সামনে কান্না এড়াতে পারলেন না। আরে ভাই কেঁদে কী হবে। শত বছরের জঞ্জাল পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছে কেন, তা আপনিও জানেন, এলাকার সবাই তা বুঝে ফেলেছে। নতুন ভবন মেরামতের জন্য টেন্ডার হবে। আপনাদের ছেলেপুলেরা কিছু মালকড়ি কামাবেন...এজন্যই তো? এ তো সোজা হিসাব।’ একই অনলাইনে শফিকুল ভূইয়া মন্তব্য করেন, ‘মন্ত্রীর কান্না হাস্যকর! কি করতে পারেন তিনি? বড়জোর একটা কমিটি আর তারপর সব শেষ, ভুলে যাবে সবাই। দোষীরা আড়ালেই থাকবে, কারণ তারা ক্ষমতাসীনদের লোক।’ রুপম মন্তব্য করেন, ‘এ ঘটনায় ছাত্রলীগের নেতাকর্মীরা জড়িত বলে অভিযোগ রয়েছে, ছাত্রলীগের সভাপতি দম্ভ করে বলেছে আগুন দিয়ে শিবিরকে বিতাড়িত করা হয়েছে, অথচ আগুন দেয়ার অভিযোগে মামলা ও গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছে শুধু শিবিরের কর্মীদের। মন্ত্রী কি করবেন সেটা সহজেই অনুমান করা যাচ্ছে।’ হাদিউল ইসলাম খান বলেন, ‘শিক্ষামন্ত্রী শুধুই কাঁদবেন, অপরাধীদের ধরে শাস্তি দিতে পারবেন না, কারণ তারা সরকারি দলের ক্যাডার। লজ্জা!’ মাফজুফা বুলবুল বলেন, ‘আপনি কি অপরাধীদের শাস্তি নিশ্চিত করতে পারবেন? নাকি আপনার চোখের জলও মূল্যহীন’? অপর একজন পাঠক সৈয়দ হোসেন বলেন, ‘এভাবে মায়াকান্না কেঁদে লাভ নেই। কোনো ব্যবস্থা না নিতে পারলে ব্যর্থতার দায়ভার নিয়ে পদত্যাগ করেন।’
বুয়েটে বর্তমান সঙ্কটের কথা সবার জানা। যে বুয়েটে ছাত্রলীগের কোনো কমিটি নেই সেই বুয়েটে হঠাত্ করে ছাত্রলীগের ব্যানারে শিক্ষকদের আন্দোলনের বিরুদ্ধে মিছিল করেছে ক্ষমতাসীন দলের ক্যাডাররা। বিষয়টিকে কোনোক্রমেই হাল্কাভাবে নেয়া যায় না। কারণ, বর্তমান সরকারের বদৌলতে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তো অনেক আগেই ডুবেছে, জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মতো শান্ত ক্যাম্পাসও অস্ত্রের মহড়ার মুখে আওয়ামী সন্ত্রাসীদের আখড়ায় পরিণত হয়েছে। রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, খুলনা প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, সিলেটের শাহজালাল বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, বরিশালের বিএম কলেজ, ঢাকার জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, তিতুমির কলেজ, ঢাকা কলেজ, ঢাকা আলীয়া মাদ্রাসা, সোহরাওয়ার্দী কলেজ, মিরপুর বাংলা কলেজসহ বস্তুত দেশের এমন কোনো শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের কথা বলা যাবে না, যেখানে ক্ষমতাসীনদের পেটোয়া ছাত্রলীগের সন্ত্রাস না চলছে। টেন্ডারবাজি, চাঁদাবাজি, দখল ও
ধর্ষণ-শ্লীলতাহানি থেকে শুরু করে হেন কুকর্ম নেই যা ছাত্রলীগের সন্ত্রাসীরা না করছে। সেদিক থেকে এতদিন মুক্ত ছিল বুয়েট। কিন্তু এবার সে বুয়েটকেও ধ্বংস করার পদক্ষেপ নেয়া হয়েছে। বস্তুত এখন আর এমন কোনো পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বা সরকারি কলেজ নেই যেখানে ক্ষমতাসীন দলের ক্যাডারদের তাণ্ডব চলছে না। এর দায়ভার কি শিক্ষামন্ত্রী হিসেবে নূরুল ইসলাম নাহিদের ওপর বর্তায় না? তাই বলছি মায়াকান্না নয়, নিজের ব্যর্থতার দায় স্বীকার করে পদত্যাগ করুন।

'Padma bridge fundraising triggered RU clash'

Rajshahi University/Rajshahi/Rangpur, Jul 17 (bdnews24.com) – Padma bride fundraising triggered the factional clash at Rajshahi University, a number of leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League RU unit hinted though there was leadership dispute after the unit's full committee was formed.

One student was killed in the clash on Sunday midnight between the supporters of the unit's president and general secretary.

Social science department's final-year student Abdullah Al Hasan alias Sohel Rana, who was shot in the eyes and succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) hours later on Monday, was also a leader of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall unit of RU Chhatra League, ruling Awami League's student wing.

However, bdnews24.com found out that all his family members residing in Rangpur were connected to Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the main opposition BNP.

The Central Committee of BCL has expelled the university chapter's Vice-President Akheruzzaman Takim and Organising Secretary Touhid Al Tuhin for violating 'organisation discipline' even though university unit of BCL recommended expulsion of eight activists.

The BCL RU unit full committee was announced on Jun 25. Then the new committee at a meeting on Jul 4 divided the university and its dormitories into 27 units and announced to form new committees for each unit.

The moment the announcement came dispute among the BCL leaders and activists surfaced over getting posts in new committees. A clash broke out on that night and two activists got injured.

Meanwhile, the BCL university unit started collecting funds for the Padma bridge after government announced to pursue the project with local finance following the World Bank's decision to cancel its $1.2 billion promised loan for the country's biggest ever infrastructure project alleging corruption.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the BCL RU unit's fund raising drive on Jul 12.

Earlier, Organising Secretary Towhid Al Tuhin had told bdnews24.com that so far they raised Tk 18,000 for the Padma bridge project.

International Affairs Secretary Mehadi Hasan Bari said that Sunday's clash ensued following an argument between the supporters of BCL RU unit President Ali Ahmed and General Secretary Abu Hossain Bipu over the control on the fund.

Bari told bdnews24.com the issue of authority over the fund collection was discussed in front of the Ismail Hossain Siraji building Sunday evening where both the president and general secretary were present with their followers.

President's supporter Tuhin and general secretary's supporter Akheruzzaman Takim, also the unit vice-president, had an argument over the issue.

Tuhin also confirmed bdnews24.com about the dispute over establishing authority on fund collection, but requested bdnews24.com correspondent 'not take it seriously'. "They [president and general secretary] have asked us not to highlight this issue [dispute over authority on fund raising for Padma bridge]."

Bari, however, said supporters of the president went back to their dormitories after the argument but the general secretary's followers stayed.

Then Tuhin and Takim engaged into another argument around 11am on Sunday at Madar Bakhsh Hall which led to the clash and gunfight between the two factions.

Takim, however, claimed the reason behind the clash was not the fund collection for the Padma bridge. "It is the responsibility of the president and general secretary to oversee the fund collection and control the fund."

BCL RU unit General Secretary Bipu also declined the allegation that dispute over establishing authority on the fund collection was the reason behind the clash. Unit President Ali Ahmed declined to comment on the matter.

The RU Syndicate launched an investigation into the incident on Monday. A five-strong committee headed by Prof Golam Kabir of Botany Department has been formed and has been asked to submit a report within 15 days.

Meanwhile, Rangpur District Jamaat-e-Islami chief Mahbubur Rahman Belal told bdnews24.com that Sohel Rana who died in the clash was the son of his party's Kaunia Upazila chapter chief Abdus Salam Sarker.

Though Sohel was involved with Chhatra League in the Rajshahi University campus, his family claimed that he was not involved with any organisations.

Residents of Bhootchhara village at Kaunia upazila, Sohel's ancestral home, told bdnews24.com's Rangpur correspondent that all members of Sohel's family were actively involved with the Jamaat and it's student front Islami Chhatra Shibir.
