Supporters storm gov’t HQ after Sadr ‘withdraws’ from politics

Muqtada al-Sadr’s ‘final withdrawal’ from politics announcement spurred followers to violently force their way into Baghdad’s presidential palace.

Iraq’s powerful Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr announced he is quitting political life for good and closing his political offices in a move that could further inflame tensions in the country.

The statement, published on Twitter on Monday, comes amid months of protests by his supporters backing his call for the dissolution of the Iraqi parliament, which has seen 10 months of deadlock – representing the longest Iraq has gone without a government – and for new elections to be held.

“I hereby announce my final withdrawal,” al-Sadr said.

He added “all the institutions” linked to his Sadrist movement will be closed, except the mausoleum of his father, assassinated in 1999, and other heritage facilities.

The announcement was quickly met with escalation from al-Sadr’s supporters, who stormed the Republican Palace, a ceremonial building inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone of government buildings that houses the office of the prime minister.

Hundreds pulled down the cement barriers outside the Republican Palace with ropes and breached the palace gates. Many rushed into its lavish salons and marbled halls, a key meeting place for Iraqi heads of state and foreign dignitaries.

Supporters, who have gathered at a sit-in since the end of July near the Iraqi parliament, also approached a counter-protest held by al-Sadr’s Shia rivals, leading to fears of an outbreak of violence between the two groups.

Iran and pro-Iran Iraqi militias threatened to kill him. Let's see where this heads.

i will respect him if he retired . our politicians not retired even after death . benazeer and bhutto are still active .

So much resources and so much fighting
Iraq can pump 10 m barrels of oil enough for everyone to own lamborghini

Just create a federation if u cant sit together divide the country into smaller perfactures and let the federal govt devolve everything apart from defense/foreign affairs

If UAE can do it why cant you

Such a shame everyone wants power rather then a solution to the problem

Game of Thrones between Shia militia themselves
Actually from what I've read, the Sadr coalition won 70% of parliament seats but Iran-allied politicians and coalition refused to acknowledge the results.

Sadr then announced his resignation from politics earlier today, as there was no hope his coalition could govern with the corruption in the gov't. He also has good ties with Iran. Which makes this confusing. The one thing we can be sure of is Iran and its allies in Iraq are trying to forcibly rule. And Sadr Mahdi army has had enough and is targeting various pro-Iran militias now.

Sadr supporters have stormed Iraqi parliament:

Al Jazeera quoting Iraqi Health ministry: 20 Iraqi's killed, hundreds injured in clashes today

^^

12 are from pro-Sadr protestors killed in demonstrations earlier in the day

Sadr supporters have stormed Iraqi parliament:
Sadr is an evil man who committed great atrocities against sunnis, also he has been game of thrones with the pro Iran prime minister Nouri El Maleki for years ever since 2006 ,but when he lost , he moved to Iran for years and now he return and his followers are claiming this to be a mouvement of liberation from Iran, which is indeed confusing , but the logical explanation is that he is fooling the Iraqis into believing that he will save them from the Iranian Octopus that is draining Iraq from all its ressources which is a fact no one can deny, then he will rule iraq and make up with the mullahs , this is his plan I think, anyways, ISIS has a big chance now to re emerge since the Arab Shia factions are busy killing each others for throne of Iraq.

Pro-Asa'aib AlHaq/Hash Sha'aabi(Iran-allied groups) page is calling Sadr army terrorists and condeming them:

Sadr is not fit for politics, like most of the political figures of this region. They do not have control and situation is out of their hands. Like what's happening in Libya now. There's a bigger , more deep-rooted issue which is lack of human rights, equality, economic prosperity and so forth.

Sadr movement and coalition is bigger than Sadr, though. They are not likely fighting over Sadr but rather for their livelyhood in this militia dominated country since the current pro-Iran gov't is usurping the power and resources of Iraq, not sharing it ... so you get backlash....
