Suggestions for Pakistan’s Bigger AWACS Aircraft: PAF Need

According to some Asian Defense Analysts PAF actively seeking suggestions for Bigger AWACS Aircraft to counter Phalcon, Currently one option for PAF is KJ-2000 but the problem PAF needs an Aircraft for KJ-2000.

IAF Expected to have 6 Phalcon Aircrafts.

What kind of Aircraft PAF can get for KJ-2000?

KJ-2000 - The current KJ-2000 AWACS in Chinese service is equipped with a domestic AESA (active electronically scanned array), also known as active phased array, radar. The radar was designed by the Research Institute of Electronic Technology (also more commonly known as the 14th Institute) at Nanjing, and it utilizes the experience gained from the 14th Institute's earlier indigenously developed Type H/LJG-346 SAPARS (Ship borne Active Phased Array Radar System) that was completed in 1998. The same Type H/LJG-346 SAPARS was also the predecessor of the active phased array radar system equipping the PLAN Lanzhou class destroyers). Chinese officials have claimed that the domestic radar is able to track more targets at greater ranges than the Israeli Phalcon radar which was offered in the late 1990.

What are Suggestions?

Can Antonov An-148 do the job for PAF?

it already has been sorted out and we plan to Install KJ 2000 AESA Radar on Y-8 aircraft rather than IL-76 to make it easy to maintain and keep the costs low to aquire greater numbers.

we currently seek up to 6 platforms (if i am not wrong).

regards.

Antonov An-148

That my friend is what I call exaggeration.

KJ2000 is good but its not comparable to Phalcon. KJ2000 was built because China was denied access to Phalcon. If China could build a better AWACS than Phalcon, they wouldn't have tried to buy it in the first place. Phalcon is the best AWACS radar in the world.

Phalcon is not actually the best before last year ... its become BEST OF THE BEST when India got it!....

Thats the end of story..

As far as KJ2000, its very small.. cheap.... junk..... even Su30 MKI have more radar range as compare to this shity KJ2000 AWACS

but good for Pakistan. So PAF should consider this platform.

Hi
and this is where you are wrong, apart from your instinctive nature to bash Chinese products your claims are baseless, you failed to comprehend that even if Chinese had acquired Phalcon, they still would have produced their own versions, French helicopters, croatles, SU-27 becoming J-11. Chinese want self reliance in advance technology as much as possible. China has developed a lot of cutting edge technologies which is beyond Israels reach without American help. and you are forgetting that was in 1990's this is 2010, Chinese have made a tremendous headway in science and technology since then. So to comment on KJ-2000 without having any credible knowledge is a little too immature

yup you are right... atleast someone telling truth...:D:D:D

Hi
i think Pakistan should also consider Embraer or any other fast plat form as well.

The premise of the thread is wrong. PAF is not looking for an alternate to counter Phalcon's range. It makes no sense for the PAF to look for a capability that offers greater detection range than what the other side has. Currently both have a capability that is sufficient for surveillance and early warning. PAF's primary consideration in acquiring other options besides Erieye are two pronged, one is to not have reliance on a Western supplier and secondly getting additional AEW capability (beyond the 4 platforms) at more favourable financial terms so all of the combat assets can be tied together.

The initial point in the first post attributed to PAF that it requires something to match the Phalcon is the usual ill-informed analysis, usually motivated by the need to put down Pakistani acquisitions and capabilities. Practically and technically speaking, there is no such need. It would be a waste of money and time for PAF to go buy something that offers greater range and tracking than Phalcon just to say so that we have it.

Erieye does what we need it to do for us and its sufficient. Additional Chinese systems will help split the workload and give more flexibility in terms of employment.

Phalcon is the best AWACS radar in the world.

If its the best then why was/is it not in the running for any of the NATO Airforces Currently at least 6-7 are considering AEW acquisitions and upgrades and Phalcon is not on the radar (pun intended) of any? If its that great then why does it only have 3 users currently?

Its a nice system, but lets not get carried away with claims like "the best" etc. etc. It all depends on how its to be used. In some situations, it could be the worst solution, in others alright and in some it would shine. Just like any other system. You may have paid more for it, but paying premium does not mean that its optimized for employment everywhere and would be considered the best as a matter of consensus (Indian consensus yes, but not across the board).

Do.. and indians r not allowed.....

I will request moderators to stop these indians to spoil this thread.

And what you wrote above is what I call "Shooting from the hip".

You do not have access to the actual performance parameters of KJ-2000 or Phalcon hence comparing the two and declaring one better than other is beyond your capacity.

The Phalcon deal was canceled in the year 2000 and the first KJ-2000 made its maiden flight in 2003 suggesting that Chinese were already working on domestic AEW platforms otherwise it was impossible for the Chinese to come up with an AEW prototype within three years. The Phalcon deal was only an interim measure, a stop gap.
