Kolkata, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com)— Kolkata Police on Tuesday arrested one of top criminals of Bangladesh, Subrata Bayen, alias Fateh Ali.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Ranjit Kumar Panchnanda briefed journalists about the arrest at a news conference.

According to him, Bayen was picked up from a house in central Kolkata's Bowbazar just after midday.

"He was arrested with some weapons and there was a lot of foreign currency in his possession," Panchnanda said.

He said Bayen would be interrogated over his recent visits to China .

Earlier this month, Bayen is said to have tunnelled his way out of a Nepali jail.

Bayen's name figured in the list of top 23 crime lords that Bangladesh had handed over to India for action in view of reports that they were operating from India.

Why did the indian government finally decide to arrest him? It should be noted that he was in India for such a long time, and there has been allegations extracted by DGFI that certain elements within the Indian government not only sympathized but even funded some of his atrocities. Why this change of heart all of a sudden? Nonetheless, I am glad to see that Indian govt also has taken some initiatives to arrest the one time most wanted man in Banglaesh, although this was due long ago.

Because he went to China. Makes me wonder, why the heck didn't China arrest him.

Subrata Bayen held in India
Police in Nepal arrested Bayen and two other officers of a special Indian taskforce on Sep 22, 2009. The taskforce officers entered Nepal chasing the criminal.

Looks like indian govt officially sheltered him and used him and now turned their back to cover indian track. It would not be surprise if he knows about killing squad india/RAW unleashed inside Bangladesh, who are responsible for Saudi diplomat killing and disappearance of Ilias Ali.

Not at all, clearly that was an indian excuse because if indian forces were chasing criminal they could easily inform Nepal authority before and while doing so. Fact that they did not and got arrested and released shows that was just a cover up excuse.

^^^Nope. Indian forces are catching criminals which are wanted in BD while people like Anup Chetia is still funded by Govt of Bangladesh. All this jail drama is a cover up to fool general public. Thats why India has demanded Anup Chetia.

All the cover and financial help provided by GoB and BGB will be extorted.

Dear friend...no system is perfect so also ours....There are so many examples where Indian security agency could not arrest so many criminals residing in our country for years....But that does not mean that Indian GOV is not trying to do it....The biggest problem in india is that if you have a political patronage even from a small village sarpanch then you are king in your area. No one will touch you. So definitely this guy might have bribed some local politician or police so that he could survive for such a log time. But that is a fact in all cases in India rather than specifically discriminating aganist BD...

I think India should reciprocate the goodwill gesture shown by their GOV and transfer this criminal to BD...

any news on this guy? is he going to be extradited to bangladesh?

Bangladeshis...please stop with the bullcrap already. This criminal was arrested as soon as he could be arrested. Entering Nepal and catching a criminal there is hard.. Pakistan has many safe houses and a network there.

And he will be given to Bangladesh either through legal means if the extradition treaty is expected to be Signed soon else he will be handed over through illegal means.

Bangladesh is indias ally and any possible help will be extended to them.

Just ask BSF to push Bayen inside BD border, BGB will do the rest,

If India not doing anything then they have problem, but now when we arrest some one still some idiots starts to cry.

Political shelter is not a new thing and happens in every country even BNP allows ULFA (terrorists not criminal) inside BD, only mutual understanding can solve both counties problem.

I think, BKZ has clearly said to Indian leaders that her party is not willing to provide shelter to NE rebels during her India visit. BNP cannot just flip flop on this issue and jeopardize important BD relationship with India.

Its a lose lose proposition to provide support to rebels on either country.

We should just live as normal friendly neighbors and discard all baggage of pre-partition history.
