In the military exercise, Egypt conducted a failed attempt to launch anti-ship missile from the submarine. In the incident, the missile that was launched from a Type 033 (NATO Name: Romeo) class and stated to be UGM-84 Harpoon, was accidentally explode before it could reach surface. There is no detailed information as to whether the platform is damaged or not. (However, it is inevitable that this type shock effect at this level can easily damage an old Romeo class submarine.)
Egypt modernized these types Romeo-class with US-based Lockheed Martin as main contractor. Originally, these submarines has Chinese origin and mostly former Soviet technology. After the Lockheed Martin efforts, UGM-84 SubHarpoon and NT37 wire guided torpedoes were integrated in these platforms, where modernization studies were completed more than 20 years ago.
Type 033 submarines developed over the Project 633 class and have a diesel-electric propulsion system.Platforms has 1.830tons with full displacement and 76.6 meters full lenght. It driven by two Type 37-D diesel main engines and double shafts connected to 2x2700 electric motor.
