Su-57 Program Cancelled

Well Pakistan would have bought 40 units just to test drive it would help sustain the research and development for it that way just a simple suggestion

This is bad news for any country wishing to enter the 'stealth' arena. Soviet / Russia is no amateur in the aviation world. They have consistently produced many -- not merely some -- of the world's finest aerodynamicists. But the cancellation of the Su-57 program is an obvious hint that making a viable challenger to the current American 'stealth' platforms is not something that can be done 'on the cheap'. There is a reason why the F-22, F-35, and the B-2 cost the amount they do, and that reason is understandably classified.

Have no doubt, China is NOT taking this news with cheer. When people thinks of aviation firsts, innovations, and pushing the limits, China is not in that list. China must be thinking of the worst case scenario for the Russian Su-57 pilots over Syria -- that they were harassed by the F-22s without knowing where the Americans were. And the Americans in their F-22s do have a history of such aviation trolling. Ask the Iranians. The J-20 is untested outside of China and the J-20 is the Su-57's peer in all aspects of development and timeline. And Russia gave up on the Su-57.
Russia choice wrong partner. Now Russia need to join China to saves time and co-develop J31 program. I am sure with Russian input in terms of Engine and other output will make J31 a beast

Su-57 won't be mass produced several thousands like MiG-21 or even several hundreds like Su-27. Latest generation jets like Typhoon, Rafale, F-22, F-35, J-20, Su-57 are manufactured less than 200. Do they replace older generation jets like Tornado, Mirage 2000, F-15, F-16, J-10, Su-27? Heck no. They complement older jets. They do not replace older jets.

Considering only 187 F-22 were ever built and Russia has a third the population of America, I would say about 50 Su-57 would ever be built. Neither F-22 nor Su-57 nor Rafale nor Typhoon will ever replace F-15, Su-27, Mirage 2000, Tornado like they were supposed to. Heck, even Super Hornet, which was supposed to replace Hornet, never replaced Hornet.

Su-57 is the world's first multi role jet that has AESA in the front, AESA on both sides, AESA at the back, giving it 360 degree coverage. That is pretty innovative.

No new generation fighter jet has ever been mass produced. Rafale wasn't mass produced. Typhoon wasn't mass produced. F-22 wasn't mass produced. Only Gripen is mass produced but it's a small plane. Heck, even Super Hornet never replaced Hornet like it was supposed to. Even Su-35 wasn't mass produced. No more than 100 Su-57 was ever be built.

Says who Russia will build thousand of Su-57 like Russia built thousands of MiG-21? Of course Su-57 will not be mass produced. Modern planes are so efficient 1 Su-57 is as combat efficient as 100 MiG-21. Only about 50 to 100 Su-57 will ever be built. Only about 60 Rafales were ever built for France. Only about 60 Typhoons were ever built for each of Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain. Only about 185 F-22 were ever built for the US. Just like Rafale never replaced Mirage 2000 and F-22 never replaced F-15, Su-57 will never replace Su-27.

Stealth is irrelevant. Super powers never fight each other anymore. The only role F-22 and Su-57 have is anti terrorism bombing sandal wearing folks who have nothing. Su-57 shoots Kh-59MK2 air launched cruise missiles range more than 500 km carried on wing pylons.

Russian planes are innovative. MiG-31 is the first plane having phased array radar. Su-35 is the first plane having 3D thrust vectoring engines. MiG-29 is the first plane having HMS. Su-57 is the first plane having AESA radars in the front, in the back, on both sides. Is Su-57 garbage? Nope. It's a beast. Its design is terrific. Is it useful? Yeah it bombs the crap out of Qaeda which Russia is at war with.

Did Russians admit defeat? Nope. Russians put the first satellite in orbit, made the first space suit, put the first man in orbit, did the first space walk, put the first lander on another planet, put the first remote controlled rover on the moon, put the first space station in orbit, put the first modular space station in orbit.

Is Su-57 junk? Nope. It's a terrific plane I'll give you that.

  • Russia announced earlier this month that the Su-57, its proposed entry into the world of fifth-generation stealth fighters, would not see mass production.
  • The jet had some promising capabilities in combat, but design and production difficulties made it a challenging project with limited export potential.
  • This move represents a failure of Russia to manage its huge defense budget and breadth of projects and to find buyers for its version of a jet meant to take on US stealth fighters.
Russia announced earlier this month that the Su-57, its proposed entry into the world of fifth-generation stealth-fighter aircraft, would not see mass production.

"The plane has proven to be very good, including in Syria, where it confirmed its performance and combat capabilities," Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said on Russian TV on July 2, as reported by The Diplomat.

But despite Russia's nonstop praise for the plane and dubious claims about its abilities, Borisov said, per The Diplomat: "The Su-57 is considered to be one of the best aircrafts produced in the world. Consequently, it does not make sense to speed up work on mass-producing the fifth-generation aircraft."

Justin Bronk, a combat-aviation expert at the Royal United Services Institute, told Business Insider that Borisov's comments "could be charitably described as an unreasonably optimistic reason why they stopped production."

Su-57 is expensive, having 1 AESA radar in the front, 1 AESA radar in the back, 1 AESA radar on the left side, 1 AESA radar on the right side. 4 AESA radars. By comparison, F-22 and J-20 which are same class both have 1 AESA radar in the front. 1 AESA radar. Su-57 costs a lot more than F-22 and J-20 because it has 4 AESA radars instead of 1 AESA radar.

you can see AESA radar on the left side

Su-57 is not the same class as F-35. F-35 is Joint Strike Fighter strike fighter, same class as Su-34 and F-15E, not built for low RCS, not built for speed, not built for agility. Su-57 is multi role same class as F-22, built for low RCS, high speed, high agility.

Considering only a few dozen Su-35S had been built for the Russia air force, it is likely only a few dozen Su-57 will be built for the Russia air force, will not replace the 250 or so Su-27 which are upgraded to Su-27SM3 standard. It seems Su-57 will not replace Su-27 just like Super Hornet never replaced Hornet, Rafale never replaced Mirage 2000, F-22 never replaced F-15, Typhoon never replaced Tornado, F-35 never replaced F-16.
