Russia does not have the luxury like China and USA to build carriers.Their economy depend on natural resources.

Actually you are wrong to some extent. Russia does have the luxury and capability to do so. Even India's other aircraft carrier was Russian built, same with China's aircraft carrier (purchased from Ukraine) which China used as a testbed to acquire the skills experience and knowledge necessary to start building their own carriers. Russia still has a mature defence industry which very few countries in the world(like U.S, France, U.K etc can match.
In fact every country in the world whose military industry isn't based on western platforms is dominated by Soviet Russian platforms or have their origin from Russian defence equipment.

I agree though that their economy will have to be up to par to keep up with all their major defence needs and overseas deployments(Syria, Ukraine, bases in central Asia, Georgia, Belarus, etc). They are still a Major world player though and a power to reckon with. Same with their diplomatic and military clout with ability to project power and fight a conflict away from home soil which very few countries in the world are capable of doing(or have the diplomatic ability to influence others into accepting their involvement).

Why did Russia even send their sole old rust aircraft carrier there for? They already have a military air base in Syria and Iran often allows them access their soil for refuelling their aircrafts for strikes in Syria. So why did they send this old carrier in Syria for?

Is this not the first real operation involving Russian Carriers?
Maybe they just want to get the experience of operating it for real.
So they need tanker aircraft, and perhaps improve maintenance.
Not good to lose planes due to lack of fuel.

They lack money. Just look at the equipment they use, and how much their budget is. It's abysmal, and what's more, they are set to tighten their budget even further to 36 billion USD.

What Russia needs is a bigger budget.

Yes, we do, but things aren't as bad as they were in the 90's, or beginning of the 00's as military is actually getting wages with which they can actually survive and feed their families (regardless there aren't enough young people who want to be military pilots)...And military pilots don't have to fly in SU's / Migs fat US/EU tourists for money for the gas or to keep their skills actual...we renewed equipment with 'joint' programs with a lot of countries, which is how these SU-33... come to existence, and eventually new systems were developed that aren't for sale when things finally got better.... now they seem to be going down the drain 'again'.....

What Russia needs is to wake up, and deal with banal country problems like corruption, and putting money where it needs to be, and not pouring it into places and pockets that it shouldn't be going.

p.s. in Russia there are more planes, than there are pilots, so loosing a plane means nothing really..

Russian need to eat their pride. Pair up with China and buy Chinese J-15. Send their carrier to Chinese shipyard to get it rehaul. I am sure Chinese can do a better rehaul job than Russian and at much lower fee.

Many of Russian arrestor hook simply breaks. It's all due to poor maintenance and lack of fund.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On November 14 and December 4, a MiG-29K jet and a Su-33 fighter respectively rolled off the deck and drowned in the sea.

"In the case of the MiG-29K, the wire broke because of the critical angle of landing, while the Su-33's landing was conducted in a normal mode and in this case it is evident that the wire's quality was a problem. In both cases there could be no complaints about the jets," the source said.

The source added that the detailed analysis of the wires could be conducted only after the arresting cables were studied ashore.

Russia's naval group, consisting of the Admiral Kuznetsov, the Pyotr Veliky battle cruiser, the Severomorsk and the Admiral Kulakov anti-submarine destroyers, and support vessels, left for Syria in October 2016 to participate in counterterrorism operations.

On January 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the group to return to Russia's Northern Fleet base after a new Syrian ceasefire was announced on December 29. The group returned to the base on February 8.
