NEW DELHI: Tremors were felt in North India today after an earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region, around 12:44 am.
The earthquake, which hit at a depth of 203.5 kilometres, had its epicentre some 280 kilometres northeast of Afghanistan's capital Kabul, the US Geological Survey said.
In India, tremors were reported from Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jaipur, Delhi and the National Capital Region.
The Delhi Police tweeted to say there have not been any calls reporting any damage or casualty as yet.
There are also reports of tremors in Lahore and Islamabad in Pakistan and Kabul in Afghanistan. An AFP journalist reported that buildings swayed in the Pakistani capital due to the earthquake.
Twitter has been buzzing ever since.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes. In October, a 7.5-magnitude quake struck Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing nearly 400 people.
A strong earthquake shook the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, late Friday night, rattling buildings and forcing sleeping residents out of their homes.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or extensive damage, but officials said an emergency had been declared protectively at hospitals.
Pakistani official Ghulam Rasool told The Associated Press that the magnitude-6.9 quake was centered in
Tajikistan near the Afghan border, beginning after midnight and lasting for 59 seconds.
However, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake measured at magnitude 6.2 and was centered in the Hindu Kush region of
Afghanistan. Twitter users in the Afghan capital, Kabul, reported feeling the tremors.
The quake was also felt in Peshawar and Kashmir in
Pakistan. In Islamabad, some residents remained outside their homes despite the chilly winter weather, fearful of aftershocks.
