State Department asks Bangladesh to buy arms from US

Although I don't want any american weapon no matter how good they are. They are sanction prone, and there are too many strings attached.
Yes, there will be condition that those weapons can not be used against American allies. India is an American 'ally'. So forget using them without American sanction if there something happen nasty with India. United States will impose arms embargo even if we are forced to go to war with Burma. Because as a global policeman he has an 'obligation' to deescalate the conflict. Plus our Democracy is almost non existent now. So American arms embargo can come at any moment. So, buying such a sensitive weapon like fighter jet from them is very risky for Bangladesh. You may become like a dog which has bigger teeth but always chained. Bangladesh should think 100 times before committing such deal.

The only thing changed is what USA does realise that they have had enough of giving you unlimited textile quota. Let see what Titsy bitsy Bangladesh can do.

Unfortunately it’s a big boy club, you are no where to be seen even in next 50 years.
Why you some Pakistanis always show such a crude jealousy and bitterness of Bangladesh's garments export ? I see it everywhere. Bangladesh is not the reason you are failing to become a top garments exporter, but your jealousy to Bangladesh is a classic case of mean minded peoples.

I do not think so.
USA now sees a country able to afford weapons costing billions of US dollars and they want to make money.

The forces goal has been there since hasina came into power. In these 10 years, the amount of US weapons/systems sold to bangladesh was negligible. We had to ask personally ask them to let us purchase their decommissioned stuff. Even then we were rejected, like in the case of C130s, which we are now getting it from the UK.

Its not the case of we cant afford it, we have bought and introduced new european systems and platforms from Italy and germany in the last 5 years. If we can afford these european systems and they took part in our tenders, i dont see why USA wont take part in them.

To me the new belt and road initiative is scaring USA, they want more political support to challenge china. Russia is another thorn for them, they enacted CAATSA, to kill the weapons industry of Russia.

In my opinion, Bangladesh should be very careful in dealing with USA, they have a reputation for screwing over their associates. They are only here to curtail the influence of russia and china.

Well Bangladesh wont be able to buy fighters from Russia for sure circumventing USA sanction. China which is also under sanction after buying S-400. Only choice left for BD for fighter procurement is Europe or USA. I am sure USA will be more than happy to sell F-16 or f-18 t Bangladesh.
Regarding C-130s that we asked for are EDA's not brand new. They only give away EDA's once their own demand for spares are met as well as demand from other allies.

USA will not impose arms embargo as long as Myanmar is in Chinese camp.
Anyway, buying from USA is far too risky. BD has a large and growing economy and can pretty much buy from anywhere now if it wanted to - although the Eurocanards only in small numbers due to high price.

BD can buy from China.

What you say has some validity but USA knows it can make a LOT of money from BD over the next few decades.
Yes, BD cannot really use US aircraft against India, but I cannot see this as being an issue with Myanmar.
At the end of the day, BD should stay away from US as it can get similar aircraft from Sweden in the Gripen.

USA will not impose arms embargo as long as Myanmar is in Chinese camp.
In 1965 war, US imposed arms embargo on both Pakistan and India. Although Pakistan was allied with US while India with Soviets. This severely hampered Pakistan's war posture during the war. So you can never be sure about American support if real conflict arises no matter how much you aligned with United States in other matters. They may consider maintaining regional stability to be more important than supporting a dependent ally. In that case Bangladesh is fcked, while Myanmar continue to get arms from China.

That is a possibility but I think unlikely as USA is in a huge geopolitical challenge with China - far more than Soviet Union as that was only a military rival, whereas China is also challenging them economically.
At the end of the day, BD has little to gain by buying F-16Vs from USA as the Gripen E is cheaper and probably a little better in air to air due to it's canard-delta config.

Two superpowers meeting

USA probably sees the writing on the WALL

BD will a 6 trillion dollar economy with 500% growth in the next few years

THey dont want another china one there hands

Gripen has same problem, American engine.

Dude - stop the trolling.
This topic is about USA asking BD to buy arms and we are debating why they are asking. Feel free to give your opinions on that.

Yes, but engines are not affected by sanctions during war time.
It is missiles that need restocking and they are European.

Go for F-16s …… For air force ..
Go for SPH for Army ..
Go for de-commissioned Ships for Navy ..

you want my opinion here my opinion

USA wants to counter china (and Russia to a lesser extent) and want to encircle china and south Asia is one of those regions that us want to counter china

thats why there is such chummy relations with India but china who just prod and bribe The Americans when they enter somewhere they dictate thats why you relations all over breaking down such as Turkey and famously Pakistan and even traditionally strong rivals like Germany

once you ally with the Americans you screw your national interest and do what they say and every weapons the Americans allow you to buy comes with some heavy strings attached and now the american are now entering your region its goin to get very interesting now for BD and India :lol:

I think you are not that far off.

USA does want to have a degree of control over BD and getting BD to buy F-16Vs would allow them to do just that.
However, I also think they just want to make money from a 300 billion US dollar economy that is growing at 8% a year. Remember even the USA needs to be able to make money and if they can get BD into the US weapons "eco-system" they stand to make 10s of billions of US dollars over the next 2-3 decades.
