Sri Lanka to remove race, religion and marital status of parents from birth certificates

I mean this move seems very interesting, sudden and to be honest, seems like out of no where..

Well you need to promote national identity but not by crushing ethnic identities, If not it's fascism

Religious identity is a misnomer i agree, Religion should not have any role in public sphere at all

Crushing is too strong which is not what I wanted to say but I do think it's natural evolution that minorities overtime gets absorbed into the majority population. Forced marginalisation from 1960s to 1980s is what started the war but gradual assimilation over a long period of time is what should happen. SL for instance should abolish the retarded practice of segregating schools under religion or ethnicity, monks (who in general are uneducated idiots who couldn't make it in life) should have absolutely no say in government policies, they should stay in their temples and keep their mouths shut and some policies at least within Colombo to mix populations with each other as in Singapore. Increasing people-to-people contact along with the need to learn Sinhalese will eventually assimilate minorities IMO.

The forced implementation of the failed Sinhala only policies in 56' repercussions wont allow that, On the other hand they have the Tamil language supremacists promoted and propagated from Tamil Nadu who think they are the center of the universe.. So never shall the two meet in the middle.. Best is to create a unique Sri Lankan identity as it's already existing in pockets in more urban area's, The link language being English, Cos language politics there are too ingrained to be a force for better

I think it's the government's decision to remove ethnic politics, minority parties etc. If you go to north for instance, it's a disaster. They still practice caste system there and politicians rely on ethnic votes to stay in power and oppress the same people who vote them. I think it's a good decision because Sri Lanka has a problem with segregation but I think it needs to crush all religions, ethnic bs equally and bring everyone under one identity.

Would you guys (Sri Lankans in general, majority and minorities both) stand by India when similarly we push for the UCC?

You didn't get my point. I meant gradual assimilation which is already happening anyway. If you go to north, you can see that there's a lot of Sinhalese language classes so I reckon, they put some effort to learn Sinhalese. I think Sinhala being the majority language, everyone should learn it. There's no way we should have to speak in English to talk to each other when we have our own language. IMO "Sri Lankan identity" comes from Sinhalese. Not that I want to marginalize anyone but anyone can become Sinhalese by speaking the language and following the culture. It's not like it's an exclusive group.

What's UCC?

Uniform Civil Code.

Same civil laws for all Indians.

No Hindu or Muslim laws of family, inheritance, marriage etc.
