Sri Lanka donates USD 50,000 flood relief aid to Thailand

Sri Lanka donated over US $ 50,000 worth of aid to Thailand yesterday, as relief to their flood affected people. The ceremony to hand over the consignment of aid was held at the Ministry of External Affairs where External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L Peiris handed over a token of the consignment to Ms, Rungnapa Srivannavit, the Charg‚ d' Affaires of the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo.

The humanitarian aid package included mainly 100,000 bottles of drinking water and 150 water tanks and would be transferred to the Thai authorities through the Sri Lanka Embassy in Bangkok.

Meanwhile the External Affairs Ministry has in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board arranged for 1300 Kg's of tea to be sent to Thailand urgently. The consignment was collected through generous donations of tea exporters. In addition members of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the National Chamber of Commerce have also contributed to the relief aid that is to be sent from Sri Lanka.

Thailand has been devastated with floods in recent weeks causing huge losses to its economy and infrastructure which have left over 600 people dead and approximately 5 million displaced.
