he suicide attack on SP Chaudhry Aslam’s vehicle was carried out from outside and neither the attacker nor explosives were present inside his car, claimed a senior official of the Counter Terrorism Department on Friday.

Chaudhry Aslam, who was the SP of the Crime Investigation Department and led several operations against militants and extremists in Karachi for years, was martyred on January 10, 2014 when his convoy was attacked using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in a vehicle on the Lyari Expressway. His guard and driver were also killed in the attack, police said.

Speaking at a press conference here, In-charge CTD Raja Umar Khattab said that police rounded up four suspects after a shootout in Karachi's Mehran Town earlier this month. They were identified as Mohammad Wazir Hussain alias Rehan, Qari Javed, Zafar Ali and Hassan Ali.

He said the arrested suspects, who were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi's Naeem Bukhari group, have made startling revelations during interrogation. "The group had a comprehensive system for funding and separate cells for different activities."

Naeem Bukhari group was involved in a previous attack on Chaudhry Aslam's house, for which a policeman, Kamran, informed the attackers of senior police officer's timings and helped them keep a watch on him, the CTD in-charge revealed.

"The suspects, Zafar and his brother, were involved in suicide attack that resulted in martyrdom of the top Karachi cop," he said.

"The January 2014 attack on Chaudhry Aslam was a suicide attack and the bomber, Naeemullah Siddiqui, had hit his car with Aslam's vehicle," Khattab said, adding that this was also confirmed from Nadra report and DNA test of the suspect.

"No explosives were planted inside Chaudhry Aslam's vehicle," he stated.

Who was Chaudhry Aslam?

Chaudhry Aslam was seen as one of Pakistan’s toughest police officers. He survived several attacks on his life, including a suicide attack on his residence in September 2011 in which eight people were killed.

Starting his career as an assistant sub inspector in 1984, Muhammad Aslam Khan, commonly known as Chaudhry Aslam, was serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Central Investigation Department (CID). He had served as a station house officer (SHO) at a number of tough police stations in the metropolis.

He originally hailed from Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Chaudhry was added in front of his name due to his role in the Karachi operation.

In 2010, Khan was appointed as a head of the Investigation Wing of the CID. Earlier, he also headed the Lyari Task Force (LTF) to uproot gangsters from Lyari.
