South Koreans react online to Japanese character traits demonstrated in hostage crisis

. . . . .
Internet users in South Korea are reacting to Japan’s national character represented by muted anger, masochistic apologies and gratitude for others after the Islamic State group released a video showing what appears to be the corpse of hostage Haruna Yukawa, according to a local media report.

Yukawa’s father, Shoichi, 74, told reporters at his home in Chiba Sunday after the Foreign Ministry called him to tell him that his son had been beheaded by the militants, “My mind went totally blank … I cannot find any other words.”

The father also expressed gratitude for the authorities who struggled in vain to resolve the hostage crisis as well as an apology for the public for his son causing massive trouble.

The father’s reaction has drawn mixed comments online in South Korea, with some praising Japan’s national character and others comparing their own with Japan’s, according to a Yonhap News Agency report quoted by Record China, an Internet-based news website.

“How could someone say ‘sorry’ after his son was taken hostage and murdered? I revere Japanese,” said one comment.

“I respect his calmness. I don’t like Japanese but feel envy,” another comment said.

“If South Korea is in a simiar situation, our government would surely face a barrage of criticism for its failure to rescue a hostage.”

One comment even went so far as to say that had a hostage crisis involving a South Korean had a similar outcome, a massive protest would be organized by mourning relatives against the South Korean government within a week, calling for financial compensation.

Japanese are polite people, sometimes too polite if you ask me, but its the part of the culture where you feel guilty when you cause trouble.
But better that way than other way around, i really admire the moral code in Japanese socieity.

Relax a bit bro, it's a fact that we are not yet as advanced as the other East Asian.
Don't get me wrong, I am optimistic, we are working in that direction, just need time bro.

lol, Japan and South Korea are just the mere pawns of the US.

No way they are more advanced than us.

You guys borrowed it from China. Unfortunately China today ditch their good things.

Lool Looks like we finally agree on something. Its true China was the mother of East Asian civilization(from Vietnam to mongolia to korea to Japan etc, all these countries where all influenced by Chinese civilization/confucious teachings/language), that was the time of pax sinicana.lol. But things indeed Changed when the country collapse(QING Dynasty),closed itself from the outside world and went into turmoil/conflict/civil wars/occupation. It got even worse when Mao's CCP initiated/launched it senseless/foolish Cultural revolution, which basically destroyed many of Chinas traditional cultural relics and permantly affected/damaged Chinas culture itself. Luckily the KMT government looted/carried lots/most of traditional Chinas cultural relics to Taiwan when they fled, and Taiwan still maintains its traditional Chinese Mandarin, unlike the modified simplified Chinese spoken in the mainland. Also funny enough the KMT was very nationalstic indeed unlike what many of us think, They are still for a one China(under their rule though), and they basically imposed/forced the Taiwanese natives to speak madarin and made it compulsory to everyone by force, reason Taiwan today is totally sinitized, there are basically no ethnic /social problems of minority ethnic groups/ favorable advantage/priviledges for 'minorities' unlike the Communist system mainland China copied from the Soviet Union, which made it possible for there to be a Tibet/Uygur issue today, since Communist always tend to want to create favors for 'minorities' which instead brings more divisions/problems/seperatisms than otherwise. Imagine the U.S/Australia gave minoritiy rights/favors/preferences/'prtotection then today they will still be facing social problems/tension because of that. lool . Had it been the KMT government, these ethnic minority groups would have longgggg been sinitized, without any word from us in the west/U.S of course(since we would have been allies.lol). China should learn from its little brother Taiwan. hihihihihihihihiihih. Thats politics baby.:D

LOL. Dude, chill, relax.
he thinks China is ahead of everything/everybody, so they dont need to learn from anybody. ahahahahah....he should listen to his brother shortgunner advice and recognise/admit when they lag behind(no shame in that).IMO

The most martial Chinese was in Pre-Qin period. At that time, Chinese was a martial race. Even the intellects were martial in spirits.

The Orphan of Zhao - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

赵氏孤儿

Voltaire once translate a REAL life story of Zhao Orphan in ancient China as a drama. It was a big hit.

The real down set of China martial spirit got something to do with China unification by Qin and Han. When country is unified for 2300 years, you do not need so much warriors. Also too much warriors were security threats towards the central government.

Confucianism has been used to control and strike a balance between martial spirit and rule by intellect.

I think Japan Bushido has to do with the fact that Japan for quite a long time is under warring states.

Mao did destroyed Chinese culture but one thing Mao has done is he manage to mobilize entire China and for a small part revive the martial spirit of Chinese. Mao is a very toxic chemo therapy and we may need centuries to see if Mao's therapy is good. If CPC survive for 1000 years, then people will have different opinion about Mao.

Actually I prefer Taiwanese culture and it is softer and more closer to traditional Chinese culture. Taiwanese has also more moral values.

PRC culture is very different. She discard a lot of moral values with sole aim of achieving goals. I have worked in PRC. People are extremely political and it is a jungle world.

I think western countries do give minorities favor, don't they?Britain do give some favor to scotish, and USA do give some favor to native indian.Don't compare Uyghurs and Tibetans with taiwan minorities, especially Uyghurs.Too many differences. You should compare taiwan minorities with those minorities live in southeastern China, not Uyghurs and Tibet, historically the link between han people and Uyghurs is very weak, when taiwan minorities have live together with taiwanese came from mainland for hundreds of years.besides unlike taiwan minorities, tibetans and uyghurs are very religious people ,that make them very hard to be assimilated.

I agree with mice 2k here ( @Yizhi @Nihonjin1051 @Chinese-Dragon ), the ROC not just inherit the traditions of Chinese civilisation, also they did quite good (not perfect though) job in to preserving sovereign soil:

Sovereign soil of Manchu (Qing) Dynasty (and Vassal States)

Sovereign soil of ROC before Retreat to Taiwan (Taiwan was under Japanese occupation)

Yes CCP is in power today, however CCP does well recognize the achievement of ROC in overthrowing an imperial monarchy and establish a republic, and view Sun Yat-sen as the only father of nation.

CCP only sees KMT's political/military leader Chiang Kai-shek as enemy, while recognize the major credit of KMT in fighting against foreigh invasion. Almost 400 KMT generals gave their life in fighting fascist invasion, and some of them were honored highest endeavor of "Martyr" (烈士) by CCP/PRC after the war.

KMT has lost civil war to CCP, partly due to their at-the-time incompetence in meeting needs of the people (e.g. anti-corruption). However their achievements in other areas cannot be ruled out, and now they have continued their remarkable excellence in Taiwan Island (tech mecca, advanced economy/society, top 10 wealthiest economy in the world, among the highest HDI). Yes CCP has political differences with KMT till nowadays, we can be even enemies, but that doesn't affect my respect to ROC and KMT.
