Sonia Gandhi, centre, is supported by Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja, left, as she leaves Parliament in New Delhi, August 26.
Sonia Gandhi, president of India’s ruling Congress party, flew to the U.S. Monday afternoon for a routine medical checkup, nearly a week after she fell sick in Parliament, according to reports.

A spokesman for Mrs. Gandhi refused to give any details. In 2011, Mrs. Gandhi underwent surgery for an undisclosed ailment in the U.S. The Congress party has declined to comment on the nature of her illness and where the treatment took place in the U.S.

“Her going to the U.S. for medical check-up is due,” the Press Trust of India quoted a Congress party member as saying.

Mrs. Gandhi is being accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the report said.

Last week, Mrs. Gandhi was admitted to the state-run All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi after leaving Parliament during a debate on the national food security bill, a social welfare program she has spearheaded. Party officials said she had a slight fever and chest pain. She underwent a series of tests at the hospital and was discharged a few hours later, said the Congress party’s general secretary, Janardan Dwivedi.

The Press Trust of India said Mrs. Gandhi had medical checkups in the U.S. last September and earlier this year. The 66-year-old, who heads the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has ruled India for much of the time since independence from British rule in 1947, is considered the de facto head of government and most powerful politician in India.

Mrs. Gandhi is chairman of the ruling United Progressive Alliance coalition, which is led by the Congress party.

She has been the driving force behind several pro-poor initiatives, including a rural work-guarantee program and a big expansion of food subsidies, a legislation that was cleared by India’s lower house of Parliament last week.

Her son Rahul Gandhi is tipped to be a future candidate for prime minister.

Rich Indians go to US for treatment, poor Americans come to India for treatment. Medical tourism is a $3 Billion industry in India now.

India's medical facilities are world class. That may not be enough for billionairs though.? There are treatments available for the super rich in US that the normal folks are not even aware of.

.
Treatment and the subsequent checkup in US is to coverup Sonia's medical issue - In a democratic country it is despicable that the medical illness of the ruling party's head is kept under the wrap.
