Farzad Zolqadri (L) and his father Gholam Reza - FILE PHOTOS
A new, high profile athletic defection from Iran shows that what started as a trickle one year ago is turning into a serious issue for the country's sports and its hopes for the next Olympic games.

Several internationally competitive athletes have defected since last September and will play for countries, such as Canada, Germany and even Mongolia.

However, none of these defections shocked Iranians as much as the announcement of a former member of Iran's Taekwondo national team, Farzad Zolqadri (Zolghadri) this week who disclosed that he has been naturalized in Bulgaria and would represent his new country in world events.

A former captain of Iran's junior taekwondo national team, Zolqadri will fight for Bulgaria on February 18 in an international tournament in Sweden.

Zolqadri's defection is quite unprecedented since he is the son of an influential figure in the Islamic Republic Taekwondo Federation.

Farzad's father, Gholam Reza Zolqadri, has been an outspoken critic of Iranian athletes defecting and seeking asylum in another country.

Dismissing the asylum seekers as traitors, Zolqadri senior said four years ago, "Those who take refuge in other countries are after showing off, placing themselves at the center stage, pocketing foreigners’ money, and disowning their national flag."

Nonetheless, Zolqadri has not yet reacted to his son's defection.

One major reason for these defections is a policy by the Islamic republic not to allow athletes to compete against Israelis. The policy is not based on any official law or government decision, but it is regularly enforced.

Judo superstar and gold medalist, Saeid Mollaei, decided to defect in August and since has decided to for Mongolia.

Mollaei complained that Iranian authorities instructed him to withdraw from Judo's World Championships to avoid fighting against an Israeli athlete.

He lost a match in apparent indifference, not to face an Israeli judoka. The International Judo Federation suspended Iran from international competitions in September.

Or freedom of travel and asylum. Depends on who you ask.

If an athlete 'defects' this means that he just does not want to go back to Iran and wants to start a new life abroad. This happens all around the world and all the time.

However, if it was someone who defected from Iran's nuclear program or the government, there can be instances where it can be a 'defection' or a traitor because he can do things against the national security of the country.

How can you call an athlete a 'defector'? Will he spill out some athletic secrets to the West relating to Taekwondo?
These news are just written by biased journalists who want to convince the world that Iran is some kind of hell from where people want to break free.

Wasnt Andre Agassi Armenian so he wasnt Muslim really
But Iranian. I have personally known many Iranian from Muslim families in the West. Defection is a very ancient strategy to sow discord in a nation. If Pakistan ever becomes openly anti west, we might see similar trends too. A lot of secular/atheist Pakistanis are eagerly waiting to join the pork party in the West.

Andre Agassi was Armenian/Assyrian and left Iran prior to to 1979 so he no defector at all, of course its old strategy of the west during the Cold War up until the 1990s we had s..t ton of "Soviet" Jews who "defected" to the west or America and were used as cheerleaders against the USSR same crap they are doing with Iran now

LOL....if the story is true, then the guy is retarded...... why defect to a third world country like Bulgeria?!!! LOL. Does he think that poor Bulgeria will give him a free appartment and a free car and cash for life?! LOL.
traitors will soon regret their actions, when they realise life was good back home, and life in the west is tough.

He refused to battle against a zionist taekwondo [forcefully] then migrated to mongolia to play for mongols.

As Iran doesn't recognize israel it doesn't allow it's athletes to battle against zionists.

Yea..... most of these atheletes are very short sighted and stupid. They only concentraite on their sport and know very little about the real world.
These idiots dont undrestan the massive payents that Iran has given them in the form of gold bullion coins and free houses as gifts.
Do they think that third world countries like Mongolia and Bulgeria will also give them these financial prizes. As well as provide subsedised food and gas and electricity and petrol....??
