  Taliban advances
  Over the weekend, the Taliban overran two district centres - Taywara and Kohistan - in northern and central Afghanistan.
  
  There has been a surge in fighting in several northern and southern Afghan provinces in recent days, including in Helmand in the south.
  
  There, amid the fighting, a US air raif on Friday killed at least 16 Afghan police officers in friendly fire.
  
  Afghan troops and police are battling largely alone on the ground against anti-government forces, after US-led foreign forces withdrew from most combat operations in December 2014.
  
  The United States is actively considering sending more troops to Afghanistan and US commanders there have requested thousands of extra soldiers on the ground.
  
  The US contingent now numbers about 8,400, and there are another 5,000 from NATO allies, a far cry from the US presence of more than 100,000 six years ago. They mainly serve as trainers and advisers.

KANDAHAR: At least 26 Afghan soldiers have been killed and 13 wounded in a Taliban attack on a military base in Kandahar province, the Afghan Ministry of Defence (MoD) said Wednesday, the latest blow to struggling security forces.

The militants "attacked an army camp in Karzali area of Khakrez district of Kandahar last night," MoD spokesman General Dawlat Waziri said.

Afghan soldiers "bravely resisted", he said, killing more than 80 insurgents.

Residents in the area described an hours-long attack launched by a 30-strong convoy carrying "hundreds" of Taliban who assaulted the base from multiple directions.

Air support was called in, several residents told AFP, though that was not immediately confirmed by officials. The insurgents claimed the attack via their Twitter account.

The resurgent Taliban have been ramping up their campaign against beleaguered government forces, underscoring rising insecurity in the war-torn country throughout the warmer weather fighting season.

Afghan security forces, beset by killings, desertions and nonexistent "ghost soldiers" on the payroll, have been struggling to beat back insurgents since US-led NATO troops ended their combat mission in December 2014.

Problem with the US is when they go to a country they don't leave, a bit like the colonialists from europe would. Now US wants to stay in afghanistan and win a war against the indigenous population that has vehemently turned against it! even the Farsi speaking afghans have joined the Pashtuns against occupation forces.

The attack happened late on Tuesday in the Karzali area of Khakrez district.

At least 21 other people went missing and seven were kidnapped, General Dawlat Waziri, Afghan defence ministry spokesman, told Al Jazeera.

"Afghan soldiers resisted the attack and the fight is now over, they [Taliban fighters] were unable to take over the base," he said.

He said more than 80 fighters were killed in the counterattack.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul on Wednesday, said the attack in Khakrez lasted four hours.

"This is just the latest assault in a concerted offensive by the Taliban all over the country," she said.

"Earlier this week they attacked in Faryab province in the north, in Ghor and Badghis in central Afghanistan, and today [on Wednesday] they launched another offensive in the east in Nuristan province."

"It seems like a concerted strategy by the Taliban to try and keep Afghan security forces stretched thin and on their back foot."

One senior army source said up to 12 soldiers are still missing following the assault, which he described as a “very heavy attack”. The militants stole guns and vehicles as they retreated, he said.

Afghan security forces — beset by a high death toll, desertions, and non-existent “ghost soldiers” on the payroll — have been struggling to beat back the insurgents since US-led NATO troops ended their combat mission in December 2014.

Afghan forces now control 59.7pc of the country, up from 57.2pc the previous quarter, according to SIGAR. But the Taliban and other insurgent groups have also seen their areas of control or influence increase slightly from about 10pc to 11.1pc.
