A quarter of the Armed Forces want to quit, a survey by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revealed.

And those who plan to leave, or who have already handed in their notice, has soared by nine percentage points since 2011.

The number of military personnel who plan to stay in the job long-term has also fallen.

In total, 25% of personnel across the Navy, Army, Marines and RAF said they planned to leave before the end of their “current engagement or commission, or as soon as they can, or have put in notice to leave”.

The figure was 16% in the 2011 survey.

Those planning to stay in the service for as long as they can has fallen seven percentage points since 2011 to 34%.

The number of personnel who expressed dissatisfaction with service life is borne out in the figures, which were released as part of the armed forces’ annual attitude survey.

The figure has risen five percentage points since last year to 32%.

The findings come as the armed forces prepare for £35 billion of budget cuts in the next decade and the loss of up to 30,000 troops, according to research by The Royal United Services Institute.

The attitudes survey also indicated only 5% of respondents had actually handed in their notice and the MoD said the “total outflow of personnel” had been falling.

Morale among officers has also risen, but less than half still rated their morale as “high” - with 45% saying so, compared to 41% in 2014.

Shadow defence secretary Vernon Coaker said: “The situation has gone from bad to worse over the past five years and is unlikely to get any better with the Tories’ current plans.

“The morale of our armed forces is of the utmost importance and the Government needs to urgently address the issues that are making so many want to leave the forces.”

In March the former head of the RAF Sir Michael Graydon said defence chiefs should be prepared to resign en masse if any further cuts in the armed forces are imposed by the Government.

Asked directly if they should tender their resignations if they were ordered to make further cuts, he said: “Yes”.

He went on: “We know that the chiefs have made their views known to the defence secretary. That is their preferred route.

“But you cannot continue down this route and pretend you are capable of doing all the things the Government asks you to do.”

An MoD spokeswoman said: “We continually strive to ensure our people feel valued and that their contribution and sacrifice is recognised.

"That is why we invest in a range of measures to improve service life, from welfare support to accommodation, while prioritising the principles of the Armed ForcesCovenant.

“We have been seeing results; total outflow of personnel has been falling for the last three years.

“We remain on course to meet Future Force 2020 targets as we move towards the agile and flexible force needed to keep us safe at home and abroad.”

The 2015 Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey was responded to by 11,877 trained personnel between October 2014 and February 2015.

The Sun Has Finally Set:(

Because to many idiots sign up and go infantry which has no longevity or future prospects and leave after a few years, sign up to a proper role and you can even get trained to a masters degree level.

I'm not surprised given the way they are discarded without a second thought.

This is what I hate about the conservatives i.e. their negligence of the armed forces. I remember the stripping down of the navy just before the Falklands war started!

This article isn't a revelation either. Having spoken to ex-servicemen, morale is shot to hell.

UK needs to raise defence spending to 3% of GDP but the politicians are a bunch of morons and would rather
waste money on pet projects to garner easy votes.

With a defence spend of 3% of GDP, the UK could remain at the cutting edge of military technology till the end of our lifetimes at least and have a military that major powers like Russia would respect.

And cuting (again) the armed forces, won't help either.
Is Cameron blind or he doesn't see what's happening on Europe's doors ? :disagree:
I'm also asking this to the other European countries that didn't increase their budget by 1€-£

Given the provocations from Russia, they better wake up now before it's too late!

(for exemple)
Before the German invasion of France, the budgets of the armies were cut,the morale was very, very low etc. because everybody said, there won't be any wars in Europe, why spending money on the armies ? .... And in 1940,Germany invaded us,we woke up.... but it was too late. :disagree:
Those that are saying there are no threats in our borders, and say there are no reasons to increase military budgets must be fool or blind !
But it's different now, because 'america is here, why should they spend 1€ ?

Well said Mon Ami! But with the US pulling Apaches and other "hardware" from Europe, what do they plan on doing now?

The only threat you have from Germany nowadays is from the German football team !

France isn't producing the likes of Zinedane and Makelele anymore ! :(

i hope this will serve 'as a pressure' to invest more on their armed forces, and not rely only on the US.

But [at least] we have a good rugby team
Football is a sport of ladies, while Rugby is a sport for real men

Him and his colleagues are allergic to the mention of defence spending. It's time for the people to speak up. It's a disgrace that the once mighty British forces are being reduced to a token force.

Don't the British have other priorities like NHS or something like that ? :bounce:
Nobody will even remark that the armed forces will be cut again. (Or am i wrong ? @waz any news on the next SDSR ? I just heard that they plan to increase the funds to equipment, but nothing else. :undecided: )
Some armies in Europe are being cut to a nowhere level and that is depressing/demoralizing.
