Does the PA have a specialized Sniper school? where? what sniper rifles does PA use? are they different from what the SSG use? Does the SSG use the Barret light 50 or some other 50 caliber rifle?:army:

.
50 cal rifles are anti-material weapons rather than true sniper rifles. So they will use other weapons. Blain is the best person to ask what weapons the PAK army uses.

.
hey keyser,

yep agree on the 50 cal role, but was just wondering... actually the 50 cal snipers are pretty much obselete in seeing the real action point of view.

7.62 and 303 and Lupa are better choice of cartridges.

ok will ask blain, actually new here so still learning the ropes.

BTW are u in the Brit Forces? and is that ur pic in ur AVATAR?

Yes that is me.

50 cal rifles have a much bigger profile and are much heavier so are not as practical in as many situations. (Some of the rifles are 5 ft plus in length) Another thing to consider is that in certain environs the extra range would not be of benefit without clean line of sight.
I not sure about all variants but I do know that some of the rilfes can also give away positions in certain dry dusty environments (even with muzzle brakes).

.
i wouldnt worry about the clean line of sight, with a hi power thermal scope, then i wonder if a muzzle signature can be detected at 1.5 km range by the enemy,

but personally give me a 7.62 rifle any day in a sniper role, im not a fan of the 50's

And personally i think that the 50 caliber sniper role is slowly going out of fashin, and getting obselete

Thermal scopes can detect a human being at 700 metres (approx).....now if you put a building or other material in the way of the LINE OF SIGHT then you cannot see much to shoot at.

.
beg to disagree,

the latest thermal scope easily outdoes 700 meters, it is in use in Afghanistan and Iraq, read about it in one of the magazines i have.

its highly confidential and not available to civilians, kind of a prototype at the moment. saw a pic of it. looks like a small palm top fixed on top of a monstor scope, it made the rifle look like it was mounted on the scope and not otherwise:P !!

my guess it it involves sat imagery help of some sort

Dude I have used the sights available with the sniper rifle (and the infantry weapons) and it can't see through buildings (the effective range is not more than 700 metres though). Most of them operate on IR and that is reduced with most modern uniform designs that have properties to reduce the signature. The palm top attached is just to give picture that can be seen by others (or to test it).

Certainly not the best person for these things, but will answer based on what I know/have seen.

PA does have a specialized sniper school. Its in Quetta and is run under the auspices of the School of Infantry and Tactics, Pakistan Army. The course requires trainees to have been in the Army for at least 2 years or so and is about a month long.

I have mentioned this in the past as well, typically Snipers in the PA are NCOs/JCOs and a very few officers (to train other ORs). Usually in the field, Army officers are not employed as snipers.

The primary "specialized" sniper rifle in the Pakistan Army is Steyr SSG 69 (7.62 mm). However scoped G-3s are also used.

SSG also uses the same sniper rifle as the regular Army and the case for snipers is the same as in regular army (JCOs etc. are trained and used in this role).

Barret Light .50 is essentially an AMR. It does not have the same type of accuracy as SSG 69 (and the purpose behind the two is different as well).

I can't say with a guarantee if Barret is in use with the SSG. It was primarily inducted in the ANF to counter the drug traffickers and their cargo. I have also seen the Light Fifty on display with Army troops so not exactly sure of the status.

Here is one just for fun with SSG69 in Quetta ;)

Hey keyser,

were u or are u posted in Iraq and or Afghanistan?

If yes, then there is a bleak chance u may have used it, but other than that... no offense but i dont think u've used it, or even seen it.

Being in the brit army, im sure u have used a few different scoped rifles though.:army:

No it is not going out of fashion, it has just come in. In my time we did not have these .50 cal rifles, so we modified a 14.5mm Kpwt with a scope, and managed to harass our counterparts at almost 3-4 km. I say harass since I don't know if we did any real damage, but we did reduce day movement of vehicles on a particular road.

Yes I was posted in those locations plus I was trained on a lot of sniper weapons.

I deal with suppliers of this kind of equipment and am fairly familiar with their operation. (Most of this kit is available to civilians as well at huge cost)

On the 50 cal rifles I talked to a friend who was part of a sniper team and the accuracy drops off after 800 metres or so apparently. They may well be producing higher qaulity ammunition for it however.

.
The canadian army currently hold the record for the longest recorded kill with a 50 cal sniper rifle.

Though regarding accuracy it took 3 shots to make the kill over a range of 2400 metres.

Hi,

There is an important point being missed over here. Different bores of sniper rifles are meant for different scenarios. Just saying that 50 calibre is an obsolete sniper rifle is totally mis-stating the fact. How can you compare a
.50 to a .308 or a 30-06. They are totally different weapons. One is designed for total destruction, annihilation and put the fear of God in anyone out of nowhere from a distance farther than sight. An anywhere round that kill due to force of its impact over 2000 yards, a round that can cut the body into two halves. The others are your conventional weapons used upto 600 yards and some exceptionally good shooters can go upto 750 yards.

Another kind of rifle is the .338 lapua, for a 1000 to 1400 yards.
The limitation in any shooting scenario are the optics----the scope has its limitations by all means.

A good place for study on sniper rifles is a web site , ' sniper rifles of the world '.
