With a view to protecting the maritime boundary, the Bangladesh Navy has asked for additional 15 per cent manpower along with sophisticated technological facilities in building a befitting infrastructure.
"The Navy is taking preparation to guard the new border line as directed by the government, since the maritime boundary has increased following the recent verdict by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)," said Vice Admiral Zahir Uddin Ahmed, chief of Bangladesh Navy, at a press conference held at Naval Headquarters on Tuesday.
"The surrounding of the St Martin's island up to 200 nautical miles toward continental shelf in an angle of 215 degrees is now included in our effective territory," he said, adding, "It will be very tough to use the huge sea-area efficiently without building enough skilled manpower." "Enough and skilled manpower will be needed to conduct geological research in the vast sea area within ten years," he said, adding, "Bangladesh should take a long-term plan to procure the valuable minerals, including oil and gas, under the seabed as well as to get precious fish."
Vice Admiral Ahmed also proposed opening of marine science department in the universities in a bid to build skilled manpower in this sector. The naval chief said, "There is marine science department in the Chittagong University while such departments may be opened in Dhaka University and the University of Professionals."
Meanwhile, the government's plan to make the Bangladesh Navy a three dimensional global standard naval force by 2021 is now going on in full swing, sources said.
At present, a new naval base 'Nirvik' and an aviation wing under Special Warfare Diving and Salvage (SWADS) Commando are already in operation.
Besides, the naval commando group, having special training on Sea Air and Land (SEAL) and Special Boat Squadron, is also active to tackle smuggling, piracy and other obstacles, sources added.
Apart from it, the naval aviation has already been introduced in addition of two maritime helicopters from Italy as part of making BNS Bangabandhu fully armoured.
Defence ministry officials said the government has already signed agreement with a German company to procure maritime patrol aircraft for Bangladesh Navy to strengthen patrol in the maritime boundary, which are expected to join Navy in 2013.
The government also planned to procure two submarines, two frigates and two corvettes for reinstallation of the old frigates remained under process and the existing ships are being equipped with sophisticated weapons.

No we're not going for nuclear subs. I wish they did.

I am not sure about where the origin of the sub is gonna be. It will only be revealed later, cos i think the government still is disscussing about it.

We are definately not going for the most advanced sub. Most probably an average one.

Yup no nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is only for our power station in our country

Guys do you think 2 frigates and 2 corvettes(all from china) is enough to deter burma(who is planning for 6 frigates)?
I mean we dont have to buy them now cos we wanna develop our country. But i do hope the govt has some sort of plan to procure at least 3 more frigates.

Btw, the article forgot to mention we are making 7 seven patrol ships in the khulna shipyard

do our commy neighbors operate any sub?

Nope, but they do operate more vessels

Buddy, Burma's coast stretch from BoB to the Andaman sea. We don't need to compete.

But under our waters, there is billions of dollars just laying around.

True. I guess it's worth the investment then. But it's pointless to purchase just for the sake of it. We need to invest carefully, and if necessary, invest a little more if there are better alternatives.
