Six Russian Kilo Class Submarines to Vietnam, Worth $3.2 billion

This will go a long way in ensuring safety and security of Vietnam in East sea , Chinese ACC Varyag will think twice before venturing into Vietnamese EEZ with so many submarines around

What planet do you live on, fanboy.

Do you have any idea what will happen to India if it proliferates Nuclear and Missile Technology.

Vietnam does not seek nuclear weapons. It relies on China´s promise that China will never use nuclear weapons on non-nuclear states. If in one day China changes its policy or Vietnam feels it cannot trust China´s words, then Vietnam will make a decision.

China´s Nuclear policy

China is one of the five "nuclear weapons states" (NWS) under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which China ratified in 1992. China is the only NWS to give a security assurance to non-nuclear-weapon states:

"China undertakes not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon States or nuclear-weapon-free zones at any time or under any circumstances."[20]

Chinese public policy has always been one of the "no first use rule" while maintaining a deterrent retaliatory force targeted for countervalue targets.[1]

In 2005, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a white paper stating that the government would not be the first to use nuclear weapons at any time and under any circumstances. In addition, the paper went on to state that this "no first use" policy would remain unchanged in the future and that China would not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against any non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapon-free zones.

Excellent news! Though the Russians at times are unreliable in terms of timely deliveries, I think they are genuine in friendship and trustworthiness.
Vietnam navy will have some real muscle power with these babies in SCS :smitten:

the diesel submarines will be equipped among other things with SS-N-27 Sizzler anti-ship missles. Though these first 6 submarines are only the first step in building a strong navy. Hope we will get the next 6 with nuclear driven submarines in a near future.

Vietnam should go for KLUBs,a good Anti Ship missile with low response time..it'll be good deterrence against any aggression..

Last year's contract on the delivery of six Kilo class diesel submarines to Vietnam, worth a total of $3.2 billion, is the largest deal in the history of Russian exports of naval equipment, a Russian magazine says.

So, what about the deals signed with India and the naval frigates ordered (and INS Vikramaditya), those deals were worth billions, more than this one...

Seems time changes opinions too....

Vietnam to get first Russian-built sub in 2013
First Project 636 Varshavyanka diesel electric submarine for Vietnamese Navy will be completed in 2013, reported ITAR-TASS citing Sergei Smirnov, deputy director of Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering. Expectedly, the sub will be delivered to the orderer at the same time. It is not specified when Vietnam would receive all subs bought from Russia.

Vietnam purchased six Project 636 submarines late 2009. The $1.8 bln contract is implemented by Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard which is said capable to deliver one submarine per year thanks to approved production process of Project 636 subs. Thus, Vietnam would get the last submarine in 2018.

At present, Vietnam does not have submarine fleet in inventory; Project 636 vessels will be first submarines in its national navy. In March 2010 Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdiukov declared that Russian Navy would help Vietnam to establish a submarine basing site. Russia may give Vietnam a credit to be spent on construction of naval base, purchase of various warships and naval aircrafts.

Displacement of Project 636 Varshavyanka submarines makes 3,950 tons; max speed is 20 knots; endurance is 45 days. Armament includes six 533-mm torpedo tubes also capable to lay mines and launch cruise missiles.

I don´t think that the Chinese are really impressed or much worried by these diesel Submarines.
Vietnam should try to obtain more powerful Nuclear driven submarines.

.
vietnam should join hands with china instead of picking a fight...regional disputes should be solved on table.....the americans never wage a war in their backyard...they never attacked cuba.....learn from it.....

Pakistan is always welcome to tell China to give Vietnam a hand!

Compared with China, Vietnam is small and weak. We are not keen on a fight with them. The history shows that the Chinese love to invade Vietnam, and we love to kill them all.

About the U.S. and Cuba relations, you may look into the history again to see if the U.S. did not try to overthrow the communist Cuba.

Nuclear driven submarines for Vietnam are useless and a liability, Unless Vietnam has objectives to dominate Oceans like USN or plans to have nuclear second strike capability, also they are very expensive and difficult to build.

Best option is to go for German AIP (Air Independent propulsion) Submarines, they are quite and difficult to detect and will do the job of sea denial against PLAN.
