December 17, 2013: The Singapore Navy announced that it has ordered two Type 218SG submarines from a German firm. These will arrive by the end of the decade and few details were given out but the Type 218SG appears to be a variant of the Type 216 that the manufacturer proposed in 2012. Thus the Type 218 would displace more than 3,000 tons on the surface, have AIP and a lot of electronics built in Singapore. These boats would be highly automated and require a crew of less than 40 and have accommodations for a dozen or more additional personnel (commandos or trainees). AIP (underwater) endurance would be 25-30 days and total endurance would be 80 days. There would be six 533mm (21 inch) torpedo tubes and 18 torpedoes or anti-ship missiles. These boats will cost at least $600 million each and won’t arrive until 2020.

Singapore generals
Singapore generals are selected base on high school results at 18 years old. Only top scholars in Singapore will ascend in Singapore arm forces.

Regardless how macho and how brave you are within the military career, you will have NO CHANCE at all if you are not among the selected cohort of scholars. These scholars are sent to top western universities and then back home to serve in the military.

Most who do not aces (1st class honors) in the universities will still be generals but will not be given important appointments and will not ascend to the very top.

The scholar general can be coward or weak and lack of courage, but the system will keep on pushing them up, and they make a lot of monies. They got CEO level jobs after retire and can make more than USD 1 million yearly after they retire.

Singaporeans are quite fed up with the system and envy those parasite but this system ensure no one go coup d'etat. It also ensure the generals have high IQ.

the new german 2 subs will cost about $2.1 billion (cost includes training and other things). incredible expensive but more performance than any of vietnam and other nations in southeast asia. the sub can more than that of similar german subs in their navy in operation today.

why singapore needs so such sophisticated subs as singapore can use the vessels to project power far from home, to the malacca strait, the south china sea and beyond, not only for home defence? the sub is even capable to assault a aircraft carrier undetected as a recent naval exercise between the German with the US navy shows.

Imagine a rich and small country surrounded by land of Salam Alekom of close to 300 million people(to be fair Indonesia from Suharto till now is our good friend).

Any second if a Singaporean Malay Muslim rant Chinese forces them to eat pig and curse Prophet M, our neighbours may get ecstatic and volunteer going Jihat in droves to rid this land dirty infidels.

And anyone us can imagine how Singaporeans feel when Malaysia frequently go after their Shia and threaten to do a 1969 event again on Chinese, like a macho man.

Even if they do not attack us, if they cut of our sea lands and deprive us of food supply, we all get starve to death.

But Singaporeans are peaceful and are sick of our military. We could have free university and free healthcare if not our military bleed us dry.

well, I can understand you feeling toward muslims. but believe singapore armed forces are very capable of. the thing is singapore has very small landmass, and lack of strategic depth. as soon as hostile (malay) army tanks successfully occupy your country and sea ports, well, game over.

you should seriously consider a defence treaty with a superpower, be America or wannabe superpower China. though, I don´t think China is a realistic option. why should mainland chinese go to war against Malaysia over Singapore.

We are a client state of USA just like Japan. However Singapore is clever, we sit on the fence and we also cozy ourselves with China.

your friendships are useless and can´t save you if Malaysia theoretically invades Singapore. the malays are friends of America, Japan and China, too.

Singaporean Chinese is like a poor orphan abandoned by everyone, but manage to strike it rich through hard work. We see Chinese being killed or persecuted in Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and during earlier times, Philipines under the Spanish.

We see native insulting and making Chinese 2nd class citizens in Myanmar.

Only Thailand is better to Chinese.

The British wanted to deliver us to either Indians or Malay because white man have been antagonistic to hardworking Chinese dominating SE Asia economically. Through a stroke of luck Singaporean Chinese manage to become master in Singapore.

We struggle.

When I was young, I heard Malay telling me Singaporean Chinese is Jews in SE Asia.

China may not help us. USA may not help us. We need to rely on ourselves. We make ourselves an attractive place that the major power have no choice but to invest in our security.

Singaporean Chinese are good. Even in power, we treated our minorities among the best in this planet,

But we need to defend ourselves.

I need to correct you a bit.

Vietnam never killed ethnic chinese just because you are chinese. I can´t say the same to China. there were very events where Chinese killed our people because we are vietnamese. If you mentioned the period of Sino-Vietnam confrontation in the 1970s, yes, there were some unfortunate events followed by chinese aggressions against Vietnam. Chinese ethnics were indeed persecuted if they did not want to become vietnamese citizens.

if you haven´t noticed, for centuries we had given asylum to numerous waves of chinese refugees, especially after the collapse of the Ming dynasty. Most of descendants of Chinese ethnics living today in Penang, Singapore and Jakarta have their forefathers coming from Vietnam´s Chinatowns.

why the people hate you calling you as jews of ASIA? well, because overseas chinese are hardworking, intelligent and rich. but you are seen as rudeness and greedy. Also, many locals claim the chinese misuse their powers to exploit the host countries. Well, not only the locals as malays hate you, but also the British and the Japanese. The Thai are different because of their belief. But beware, we vietnamese hate the Thai. sometimes we hate chinese, too.

Veritas dude change your dp..coz few days ago read a thread in which chinise blaming doremon for all the problems

Indian Navy will always remain present to protect the Singapore, because if the Singapore lost then it will be tactical defeat for India in Indian Ocean.
