KUALA LUMPUR - Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has said that Singapore was once owned by Johor and the state of Johor should claim that Singapore be returned to it and to Malaysia.

"However, there is no demand whatsoever of Singapore. Instead, we show our appreciation to the leadership of this new country called Singapore," he added during a speech on Sunday (June 19).

Tun Dr Mahathir also said the Malaysian government deemed it more valuable that they won control over the islands of Sipadan and Ligitan off Borneo against Indonesia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), while giving up a piece of rock "the size of a table" - Pedra Branca - to Singapore.

"We should demand not just that Pedra Branca, or Pulau Batu Puteh, be given back to us, we should also demand Singapore as well as the Riau Islands, as they are Tanah Melayu (Malay land)," he added to applause from the audience.

The 96-year-old former premier, known for his controversial remarks, was speaking on Sunday at an event in Selangor organised by several non-governmental organisations under the banner Kongres Survival Melayu (Congress for Malay Survival) and titled Aku Melayu: Survival Bermula (I am Malay: Survival Begins).

In his opening speech, which was live-streamed on social media, Dr Mahathir, who is MP for Langkawi, said that what was known as Tanah Melayu used to be extensive, stretching from the Isthmus of Kra in southern Thailand all the way to the Riau Islands, and Singapore, but is now confined to the Malay Peninsula.

"I wonder whether the Malay Peninsula will belong to someone else in the future," he said.

He also said Malaysia today is not owned by bumiputera, because many Malays remain poor and they tend to sell their land.

Urging his audience to learn from the past, he said: "If we find we were wrong, we should rectify these wrongs so that our land remains Malay land."

The ICJ had in 2002 ruled that Sipadan and Ligitan belonged to Malaysia and not Indonesia.

In 2008, the ICJ ruled that Pedra Branca belonged to Singapore, while sovereignty over nearby Middle Rocks was awarded to Malaysia.

In 2017, Malaysia applied to the ICJ to revise this judgment. But in May 2018, after Dr Mahathir became prime minister again, Malaysia announced that it would discontinue the proceedings.

Militarily Singapore is way too powerful than Malaysia but lacks strategic depth..... If Malaysia attacks with full determination it's highly possible for large Malaysia to occupy it

This is a can of worms. If the real history is revealed, a lot of Malaysia Malay elite families will be in shame -- being race traitors who facilitate 1824 anglo dutch treaties, basically a atrocious cut on Malay race. A while lot of Malay elites are stained in one way or another and their scion are the one pulling strings today -- in front or behind the screen..

The reality is the other way. Bendehara dynasty main branch is in Riau while Cadet branch in Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia should claim Singapore and Johor.

In this dirty scenario, Indonesians are the cleanest.

If Dr M continues his dirty mouth on this issue, soon Malay elites will finish him off.

He is a straight talker but makes faux pas.
Technically Singapore is the result of the bloody Brits much like most of the geographical enmities of the world
Singaporean people didn't even want separation, Malaysia only has itself to blame for losing Singapore.

Singapore will shred Malaysia if that happens, if Singapore falls it will take Malaysia down with it.

I know that Singapore has a powerful Air force and Navy but I have been to Singapore and that country is so small I doubt any determined attack by geographically larger country like Malaysia with decent military which it possesses will give Singapore enough time to save it's bases and then allow it to counter attack....

Do you think that the world will sit by and let Malaysia do something like this? Despite its small size and population, Singapore is an extremely important player in the global economy and attacking such a country will result in a very strong reaction from all the major players of the world. Also, you are incredibly blessed to have visited Singapore, it is my dream to visit this wonderful country once in my lifetime.

Yes this I agree especially USA is not going to take such invasion lightly.....

And yes Singapore is really a beautiful country..... I was there for 12 days with family and how quickly those 12 days passed I didn't even realise.... Visited Malacca city in Malaysia too in the same trip when I had booked cruise ship ride from Singapore to Malaysia.....

But when I visited Singapore I just was listening this old hindi song of Shammi Kapoor and realised how perfectly that song described the beauty of Singapore..... Please do visit once....

Yeh shahar bada albela har taraf haseeno ka mela....

My father was lucky enough to visit Kuala Lumpur to do a course by Shell Aviation as he was their employee, he said that the whole city was literally a majestic garden. When his plane was landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport he felt like the plane was landing in a garden. He also said that it was always raining over there.

It's my dream too to one'day visit kaula Lumpur as that time I could visit only Malacca city in Malaysia as my package was only for that..... Yes Singapore and Malaysia falls in a belt where it rains throughout a year..... In Singapore many times it was a bright sunny day but when it will suddenly change and start raining you don't know..... I have experienced this 2 to 3 times in my 12 days stay.....

It is Malaysia who throw Singapore out from the Malaysia federation. The reason is because during that time the population between Malay and Chinese ethnics are balance in the federation, so to get majority Malay should throw Singapore out from federation.

The reason of why Malaysia is won in Sipadan and Ligitan case is because Soeharto wants the dispute solved peacefully and therefore he is agree to bring the case to international court. The reason of the win is because :

1. Those two tiny islands have already been occupied by Malaysian citizens who live there.
2. Many of the judges are British that favor Malaysia, while Japanese judges who are minority choose Indonesia.

---------------------------

That Strait Time reporter (and editor who approve the news) are not good in absorbing the statement by Mahathir, Mahathir means Singapore should be Malay land just like Riau islands (Sipadan and Ligitan case).

Any way, Riau islands are indeed Malay land as those living in that islands are Malay ethnic from Indonesia.

Shouldn't have given Singapore independence all those decades ago.

Yes, Singapore has a pretty good reputation in the World and countries will be lining up offering to help them. Probably not be a good PR move to get the whole planet against you.
