Shun beef to stop climate change, says India

What the OP meant and what this thread has degenerated into is totally different. Please dont think I am supporting a Indian minister who 9 out of 10 times are spewing bullshit. But this guy is actually telling us something which is a relatively unknown phenomena and actually correct.

Scientifically it is true that methane is a more harmful gas than CO2 when it comes to greenhouse effect.

Every cow has bacteria in its gut that help digest the cow's
food, but also produce a gas called methane in the process. Methane is called
a "greenhouse gas" because it traps heat in the atmosphere like carbon-
dioxide. So if you add up hundreds of burps from millions of cows, you get a
lot of methane going into the atmosphere, which is just one of many sources of air pollution.

Neither is it in OP's power to ban eating of beef throughout the world nor his intention but his statement was not stupid (although to an ignorant person it may look like that).

.

By taking the highlighted part in your post into consideration, it is assumed that the real problem are the cows and their digestion system right?

So if we want to put a tab on dangerous emission due to Cow burps then we must eliminate all the cows from the planet.

what you say?

.
if non veg eaters are envirnomental undfriendly then i guess all the industrial projects are more envirnomental undfriendly, so better stop all projects.
well that could be done but ,, industrial projects are a requirement . eating beef is not .
However the minister's words are precarious. We can expect Ziad Hamid to broadcast his next conpiracy/entertainment theory any time now on NEWS1 saying this is a Brahmin-Baniya Hindu Conspiracy to take over the world.(esp bcoz brahmins and baniyas don't eat any kind of meat and no hindu eats beef):taz::chilli::taz:

.
no hindu eats beef

Stop the non sense. The people in northern India are bound by extreme Hinduism. I'm a Hindu and me and my state know what is good and what is bad. 9/10 hindu you see in kerala will eat beef and they are never worried about gods and sacreds.

We keralites never even talk about religion. We know how to sensitive it is and how to handle is.

Its the lack of education in northern india and ill conceived ideas creating this false beliefs.

Jana I am neither suggesting nor advocating doing anything. I am just explaining what the OP meant.

World leaders keep shouting that CO2 gasses are released due to development in India and China, but that doesn't mean we are going to stop our industries.

But we definitely will learn from their mistakes and try to improve our growth in such a way that it reduces the emissions. Similarly the methane gas problem can be solved by special meal which If you had google'd you would have found out about that too. Not everything needs to be done in the extremist way.

The minister was suggesting a solution for this as stop eating beef but If there is a better solution I am sure even he would accept. But instead of understanding the problem and trying to solve it if we try to find problems in trying to solve the problem that would be stupidity.

From what I have read in other posts you are a journalist. Aren't you a little bit curious about this new thing which you didn't know about and want to find more about it instead of just labeling it as Indian bullshit.

We Indians too sometimes say some good things. It might take us another few years for the next one :)

This ignorant comment of yours is proof enough of your "lack of education"
Just the way we hindus see our motherland literally as a mother as in" Bharatha mata" we also see the cow ----- whose milk we drink and which has several medicinal utilities as a motherly form which shouldn't be harmed. This I find is lofty and by no means an ill conceived idea.
How many of you educated keralites spare time to read scripture before inflicting your "Know-it -all ism" upon the rest?:bounce:

And no-- I am not a north Indian

We are having a scientific discussion and not a religious one and I don't expect someone with a abuse in his name to be able to speak about Hinduism.

Unless I am mistaken and makikirkiri means something else to what I have inferred then I apologize else you don't have moral fiber strong enough to comment on my religion.

Thanks for not using TOI link as it did not serve the intended purpose.

If other animals meat is called beef then I think that pork is more healthier than Cow beef. Its tastier too.

Pork is not healthier, and it smells awful.

However he couldn't just keep it to scientific discussion could he?I then must and will reply.

You could have countered what I said about hinduism in your educated way rather than what you did.
I just am ashamed at your educated lack of education .Say all the ignorant things you want to say and hide behind profile names when they hit back ... is that the education you got?

you don't have moral fiber strong enough to comment on my religion.
regarding religion I am only presenting whats in scriptures and I am commenting only on your misplaced feeling of educational/ moral superiority

You don't need to take the effort infer anything reg my profile name. It's a slang word commonly used in my city Hyderabad and you may google the word 2 learn abt the variety of ways/contexts in which it is used.

Actually the carbon footprint of cows is definitely much more than of a potato. Or lets say a ton of a cow has a larger carbon footprint than a ton of a potato.

BUT thats what the Indian minister for environment said. By this carbon footprint argument, all cows will have to be eliminated. This might sound stereotypical, but I guess Ramesh sahab would kill himself before letting us kill cows to reduce the carbon footprint.

His argument was revolving around farts or breaking wind if you may :D Thats whats funny.

And sorry, nobody is going to go vegetarian to reduce the carbon footprint. Google produces an insane amount of carbon footprint, should you stop using google? If we all lived in caves, the carbon footprint would be minimal but thats not about to happen.

You need to hit the big wigs like dirty industries, byproducts of inefficient machines, illegal dumping of waste materials, so on... and not become a nuisance to the rest of the world by becoming one of those save the rain forest hippies.

What hon Zardari says to Palin implies to all Pakistanis? or what hon ZAF's famous "Suuar ke Bacche" words for Bangladeshis implied to all his countrymen then?
It sort of does, which is why we were embarrassed by it. Moreover we have all dumbasses coming to power with fraudulent elections. Your elections are supposedly free and fair. You guys are voting them in...

Chill yaar, just pulling your leg with this one. Was it not clear with the use of smilies?

.
Listen up Bushy. There are 6 billion people and may loess than a million cows, so who produces most co2

.
Stop eating beef? Yeah right, hands off my steak Mr Ramesh.

I would think that CFCs from factories, cars, ACs, powerplants would have more of an impact that the farts of the beef eaters.

You are mistaken, its not only about "farts" -

"If you count the emission associated with beef production, it is huge," Pachauri, who is Director General of The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) and Chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel of Climate Change, told reporters.

Huge pasture land is required for meat production and at times the forest resource is denuded to make it pasture land. The cattle are given food grain which is produced by using chemical fertilisers and pesticides, Pachauri explained.

"Then the meat has to be refrigerated and transported. It is an international industry. It is kept in refrigerators in outlets. The whole process involves huge green house gas emissions," he said.
