They were fighting for freedom and they indirectly led to the formation of Pakistan. And even non Desi's respect them since they took on the might of the British Empire and wanted to free the country.

Concept of Seperate state for Muslim by Jinnah got soured in 1947 itself when many muslim chose to live in India than migrating to Pakistan...Later Dictatorship rule in Pak & Zia's islamisation killed the original concept for which great muslim leaders & thinkers were determined for. Pakistan what we see today is not the nation for which Jinnah & his Muslim league leaders were aspired for.

Bhagat Singh or Udham Singh should not be related with Partition issues they should be respected for their efforts to liberate hindus, muslims, christians, etc from British Opressions.

While they were fighting for the freedom of the entire sub-continent. But they were sikhs and probably would have been against the partition of sub-continent just like most hindus and sikhs.

Also sikhs and hindus killed around 500,000 to 1 million muslims in 1947. So honouring these sikhs as national heros and freedom fighters by pakistanis would be an insult to those million muslims who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan in 1947??

If there was no partition, then for the muslims in sub-continent, there was not much point in getting rid of the British raj. The imperialism of the British raj would have been replaced by a hindu-dominated government. And yes in that scenario as a muslim i would have preferred to live under the British raj instead of living under a hindu-dominated government.

LAHORE: The authorities have renamed a roundabout in the eastern city of Lahore after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh to acknowledge his revolutionary spirit and his role in the movement against the erstwhile British rulers of the subcontinent.

The Shadman Chowk of Lahore will now be known as Bhagat Singh Chowk, officials said.

Bhagat Singh was hanged in March 1931 in the erstwhile Lahore Jail, which stood at the spot where the roundabout was built later. While authorities have changed the Hindu names of several places in the old quarters of Lahore over the years, the decision to rename a busy roundabout after Bhagat Singh has been hailed by some local residents as a bold move.

District administration chief Noorul Amin Mengal recently directed the City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) to make arrangements for renaming the roundabout after Bhagat Singh within a week.

He said all Pakistani citizens, including Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and Christians, had equal rights under the Constitution and no one should object to the decision to rename the roundabout after Bhagat Singh.

Mengal ordered officials to immediately place a board indicating "Bhagat Singh Chowk" at the roundabout and to issue a public notice in the print media for seeking public comments about the move.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh & Shaheed Udham Singh fought for India, which was neither hindu nor muslim. Without their efforts & sacrifice, freedom struggle would not be so intensified like it was.

Sir Jinnah had huge respect for Bhagat Singh, his speeches & writting showed the deep love & attachment towards the Prince of Matyrdom, Who cares about what common Pakistani think about them?? will it belittle their sacrifices & greatness??

What can be expected from Peoples who forgot ideology, sacrifices & dreams of founder of their own nation??? Constitution accepted by Jinnah was thrown to dustbin within 2 decades of his death, his concept of secular & democratic nation is raped in every decade by military generals & public hail army for that.

Its good to see Shaheeds were born on our side of border, atleast their families feel proud for sacrifices they did for independence.They will always have respects for every indian hindu, muslims & every human with self respect & self esteem for letting Goras know that indians have backbone & respects

The British treated the sikhs far better than the post-1947 hindu-dominated India. Operation bluestar and after that the pogrom of sikhs in Delhi in 1984 even made Jallianwala bagh massacre look like a minor riot.

Even your Jinnah was kind of them , what he struggled for & what he got in return?? Today's Pakistan which is like a abuse to Jinnah's Dream Nation??

Is that what your army tells you after killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Kashmiris?

Bhagat Singh deserves to be remembered. The attempts to block this are absurd.

The belief that the Taliban or other militant forces alone are responsible for the spread of extremism in our country is a flawed one. In fact, the extremist mindset has taken over the people of Pakistan and is affecting every aspect of life. This is indeed what makes it a devastatingly dangerous force, distorting thinking and adding to bias in matters of everyday life.


Most recently, this has surfaced in the controversy over the renaming of landmarks in Lahore. In the latest development, on November 16, the Lahore High Court (LHC) restrained the City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) from renaming Fawwara Chowk in Shadman after Bhagat Singh. Singh was a hero of the Indian independence movement, which led to the freedom from colonial rule of both India and Pakistan in 1947. Singh, aged only 23, was hanged by the British at the said chowk in 1931, for killing a British officer and for other acts aimed to rid his nation of oppression. In Pakistan, his extraordinary courage is almost never acknowledged.

Hearing a petition filed by a Tehreek-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool member, an LHC judge has stayed the name change. The petition states that it was earlier decided that the chowk would be named after Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, the man who coined the name of Pakistan. It also says that a “so-called” foundation had been established in the name of Bhagat Singh and that it has, with other “so-called” human rights associations, pressured the CDGL to name the chowk after him.


If anything, the petition illustrates our growing ignorance and sheltered approach towards other religions. Despite attempts to alter this attitude and include the story of Bhagat Singh in textbooks, this has not happened and large sections of the population have no idea about his achievements. Born near Jaranwala in Punjab and educated in Lahore, it is entirely illogical that his religion should exclude him from tribute in the land he grew up and died in. Bhagat Singh deserves to be remembered. The attempts to block this are absurd.
