What matters in relationships is shared interests and weight of each country.

Japan's economy is twice as big India's but its population is aging and very small. Hence India and Japan have shared interests. Also, both have border disputes with China and are on either side of Chinese border which makes them natural allies. There are no conflicts between India-Japan to put a stress on this relationship.

On the other hand China keeps suppressing the fellow Muslim Turks in East Turkestan as Pakistan is forced to look the other way and act as nothing has happened. This is due to the one sided nature of China-Pakistan relationship. Had Pakistan's economy was around $5 Trillion the relationship would have been different. Pakistan does not have any disputes with Japan but is being forced to fight the Japanese due to its relationship with China.

US-Pakistan relationship was based on Economic (Aid/Loans/WB/IMF/ADB), defense sales (F-16s) and strategic alignment (SEATO, CENTO, Major Non-NATO ally). Now this US-Pakistan relationship is being replaced by Sin-Pakistan relationship which is again based on Economic (Loans/CPEC/AIIB), Defense (JF-17s, F-22P, Subs) and strategic alignment (SCO).

There is no net gain to Pakistan.

1- Japanese investments are reasonably high in India and more is to come as they are getting their ROIs in the way their businessmen want. Do read up on SoftBank's investments.

2- We know Japan won't fight our wars and nor would we fight their wars, unless somehow we both are attacked simultaneously. But their political support is very important for India as they are one of the most prominent countries with excellent relations with everyone and hold an excellent global political image.

3- On the contrary, Japan is much close to China's big centres than we are. Tibet is empty and acts as a buffer zone for the Chinese. There is no other buffer zone if sh*t hits the fan on eastern front. China just needlessly heated up the western border of their country which was perhaps the most peaceful they could ever have.

Rafale deal? What about it? The deal was scrapped because price negotiations were stuck. That was the whole point.
