Such prejudices existed in the past because we as Indians didn't know much about our fellow Indians. To us a person from North east was a chinky, south indian was dark, Punjabi's were drunkards (high on hormones!) and Maharashtrians were ghatis.

But yet again, he's not off the mark by pulling a blank statement on south Indians. Take any bollywood movie which shows a south Indian character (i'm not talking about 2 states movie lol) south Indians 're shown as dark, with curly hairs and a peculiar accent. Lolzz

there was one sikh boy in my class( school ) , my good friend , he always used to be teased around for his phatka , then there where NE guys in college ( people in my college thought they came from china to study in india , *facepalm ) and all this happened in our south.

Yes South Indians do prefer fair skin....but North Indians make it more obvious.
And you're wrong if you thought that only punjabis hold such prejudice. Punjabis take it to a diff level but that doesnt mean rest of India or north India is free of such prejudice.
While attending a marriage at Unnao (Kanpur) one lady told us that "if the girl is fair and pretty, then lesser dowry is demanded by guy's family".And mind you that came from a lady who belonged to a very affluent and educated family.
Another incident I would like to quote is of my Kashmiri fren who has a wheatish complexion, she often came under the hammer from her fellow kashmiris who used to take a dig at her complexion. She was called unfortunate (Bechari!).

Also in North India, there has developed an attractiveness gradiant in favour of fair skinned girls due to prefrential mate selection by higher castes who also happen to be fairer. Thus it at least explains fair colour preference among North Indians (again explaining, not Justifying). It is fair colour preference in South Indians which is not explainable as among South Indians, even dark coloured females are extremely beautiful.And I have seen this fair colour preference in South Indians to much larger extent than among North Indians.


Punjabis are unique piece in North India. They have seriously drunk the martial race theory Kool-aid of British and their assholism is "me martial racial" type, rather than being explicitely skin colour based (like Pakistani Punjabis).

North Indian have that prejudice .You dont need to go there.Just look at their serials and films.

Fair skin prejudice is also in South India, and much more stronger than in North.
