What's new

Sexual harassment at LUMS, don’t blame the university!

You could easily refuse or retreat, a girl in many cases, isn't able to, without being labeled something and losing respect. Therein lies the difference between both genders.

I don't know how it is in Karachi, but in Bahawalpur, If a guy harrasses a woman and she calls out loudly, almost every man in the area will start beating up the guy.

Most Pakistani girls I know, do not accept harassment. In reality a woman's 'reputation' does not fall because some asshole passed a lewd comment. In most cases a Pakistani woman is fully ready to humiliate a guy that passes any kind of crude comment, right there and on the spot.

. .
there are two issues here.. (a). the stupid attitude many females have about not talking to men or not reacting nicely to flirting but instead acting offended... they do this not naturally but because "oh, what will others think??", (b). the moralistic attitudes in south asia which are against human freedoms ( especially of ladies ).

One student walked into class wearing a sleeveless top and her professor exclaimed,
“Girls who dress like this, their mothers do not sleep at their homes at night.”

that is what real harassment is about... it is a very south asian attitude which has allowed misogynist males ( and females ) in other cultures to confidently make such remarks... their confidence is because of our stupid culture not be eradicated.

how can south asians admire songs about bulleh shah and yet allow such moralistic ( aqlaaqi ) attitudes to remain??

and remember the saying... the greatest enemy of a female... is another female.

She quietly went to her seat; she did not want to “create a scene”.

and that is also what allows moralistic harassment to remain... i request pakistani members to tell the ladies they know to join the "blank noise project" which was started by ms. jasmeen patheja in one of the most crime-infested and moralistic cities in india... bangalore... this project aims to directly confront harassment of ladies for moralistic reasons... like dress-codes and having boyfriend.

They asked me If I had the time. When I said the it was 2:30 they giggled and asked me for my phone number. I was like wtf? I got on my 125 and left with an uneasy feeling.

now, why don't i believe your story?? if you are as dehati and quarrelsome off-line as you are on pdf, i would pity those two females, if they ever existed...

i agree with @Jf Thunder

I am a ghairatmand Chaudhry that does not live in the shadows of Ghaddafi, although I considered him to be a respectable man. Women are nothing special for me, as I have realized there is only one bond that is important.

i never understood what "ghairat" means... even some pitifully salaried male or some muliti-generation bonded-laborer family seems to have "ghairat"... every voluntary ghareeb seems to have ghairat... mystery thing this...

that does not live in the shadows of Ghaddafi, although I considered him to be a respectable man.

shadows?? i myself am a leader in the movement... and i am not a follower of any person... just a humble student of some great leaders.

Women are nothing special for me, as I have realized there is only one bond that is important.

which is??

Thats very genuine,I would not call it a stupid attitude.
I would ask a guy to not flirt with me on his face...thats if I realize the guy is persistently flirting.

Moralistic attitude would stop a gal from talking to a boy but I dont think any gal would allow a guy to flirt with her unless she's genuinely interested in that guy.

Keeping quiet is the worst mistake ,because then abuser might try it again and in a more harsher way to evoke a response from the gal.It should be nipped in the bud.But then which gal would take risk when she knows that tomorrow she might also turn into an acid attack victim or something similar.
Ignoring is generally accepted as a way to not provoke the abuser further.

Its quite similar here, but you really do have to summon the courage to call first, they aren't of course on auto-alert. Having said that, it doesn't mean that such problem doesn't exist in the country. It might be better in the urban areas, but the reports that come out of the rural ones, are heartbreaking. The blame of harassments, in the ends, gets placed on the opposite gender, resulting in them being labeled as wani-kari and subjected to severe torture and honor killings, or living under pathetic conditions from then onwards. It happens, you cant pretend that all of this is not real and a figment of imagination.

You are talking about girls on streets being teased by random strangers, things are a little different when they are harassed by people in position of trust, because there they have a lot to lose. A passing stranger on the street is very different from your employer or teacher.

thanks for seeing that it was genuine... you know, i am quite dashing, presently ( if i say so myself ), and i am used to ladies staring at me, or urgently and tensely telling their female friends to look at me... but sometimes i am offended when some younger females pretend that their husband or boyfriend is some dashing man who is commander in some revolutionary brigade... i am offended by the fake-ness of these females' behavior... that cannot be the reaction nature allows... if they see a beautiful man, they should react naturally.

as for persistent flirting by men... if not goon-ish or silly... should be naturally reacted to by ladies... i as a man will not react offended if three ladies flirt with me... :-)

Moralistic attitude would stop a gal from talking to a boy but I dont think any gal would allow a guy to flirt with her unless she's genuinely interested in that guy.

that would make a collection of ladies for me then... :D

jamahir, my boy... you are quite something...

i agree, and you used the proper word here... "abuser".

Ignoring is generally accepted as a way not to provoke the abuser further.
