A “severe cyclonic storm” is expected to make landfall on Tuesday night, the US Navy and Air Force’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts.

Based on the forecast, an alert has been put out by the Tropical Storm Risk, a UK-based storm forecaster.

The wind force could reach 166 km/per hour for a while during the cyclone, while wind gusts may be even stronger, the alert said.

The depression in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a cyclone that is likely to hit Bangladesh’s southern coast by Tuesday.



Cautionary signal “3” has been sounded for all ports by the Met department and fishermen have been asked to stay away from the sea.

Met’s weather expert Hafizur Rehman told bdnews24.com on Saturday that cyclone has been christened “Mahasen”.

All cyclones are named from a list drawn up and periodically updated.

‘Mahasen’ is a Sri Lankan expression.

Hafizur Rehman said the depression in south-east Bay of Bengal has moved northwest as it intensified into cyclone ’Mahasen’.
He said it is expected to move further north and northwest.

The US military had already warned of a 'severe cyclonic storm' likely to hit coastal regions of Myanmar's Rakhine state and adjoining areas of Bangladesh.

Met department says the depression , at 9 am Saturday, was centered 1700 kms south of Chittagong, 1610 kms south of Cox’s Bazar and 1705 kms south-east of Mangla port.

The wind speeds have gone up from 62 kms per hour to 88 kms per hour.

Fishing trawlers and boats have been asked to stay close to the coast and avoid deep sea.

Cautionary danger signal “3” has been sounded at Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla as the sea was getting turbulent.

Cyclone ‘Mahasen’ was continuing to move towards the Chittagong coast, prompting retention of cautionary signal ‘3’ in all ports of Bangladesh.

In a special bulletin of the Bangladesh Met office, the cyclone was located around 1,285 kilometres south to south-west of Chittagong port, 1,305 kilometres south to southwest of Cox’s Bazar and 1,305 kilometres south of Mongla port at 6:00am on Monday.

The cyclone is likely to intensify further and move in a north to north-westerly direction, the bulletin said.

But the bulletin said that the cyclone was moving more slowly compared to the last two days. After Sunday evening, ‘Mahasen’ has only moved 25 kilometres.

Bangladesh Met office forecast maximum sustained wind speed of about 62 kms per hour within 54 kilometres of the storm centre , which may go up to 88 kilometres per hour. The sea will remain rough around this region.

The United States military said that the cyclone might sweep through the Rakhine province of Myanmar and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh by Tuesday afternoon.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) of the US Navy and US Air Force estimated that winds might touch up to 166 kilometres per hour at the time of the landfall of 'Mahasen'.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department Forecaster Hafizur Rahman told bdnews24.com that ESCAP typhoon committee named the cyclone ‘Mahasen’ after a King who ruled in Sri Lanka during third century.

UN warns tropical cyclone threatens millions in India, Bangladesh

UNITED NATIONS: The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Tropical Cyclone Mahasen is moving toward India, Bangladesh and Myanmar and is expected to land later this week, Xinhua news agency reported.
"A red storm alert remains in effect for Tropical Cyclone Mahasen which is moving towards India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is expected to make landfall on Thursday," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said at a daily news briefing Tuesday.
"Depending on the cyclone's final trajectory, it could threaten the lives of millions of people in northeast India, Bangladesh and Myanmar's Rakhine State," he said.
Bangladesh and Myanmar have issued a cyclone alert and made necessary preparations for the storm.
Humanitarian agencies in Bangladesh have started prepositioning supplies in the most vulnerable areas.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday said Mahasen was currently in the Bay of Bengal, some 1,355 kilometres south west of Chittagong and could make landfall in the country's southeast on Thursday.
In Myanmar, the Rakhine State government has activated its disaster reduction plans including relocation and evacuation.
Myanmar has begun moving people living in flood-prone camps in Rahhine State in western part of the country to higher ground in preparation for the cyclone, reports said. -- BERNAMA
