Sethi claims commercial value of PSL has ‘grown’

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) executive committee chairman Najam Sethi believes the Pakistan Super League (PSL) belongs to the country and is determined to bring at least two matches to the home fans in the next edition. “We are determined to bring PSL to Pakistan where it belongs,” Sethi said during a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium here on Friday. He added that the tournament’s organisers were already in contact with some foreign players. “The authorities in Karachi and Lahore are urging us to convince players to visit the country and they are ready to provide foolproof security.” The PSL chairman said he discussed the matter with Dean Jones and Kevin Pietersen and both showed positive signs. Sethi’s hope to organise a couple of matches in Pakistan derives from the improving security situation since government and army are doing their best to eradicate terrorism.

Sethi, who is also the PSL chairman, termed the success of the PSL a major success for Pakistan as it promoted a soft image of the country. “We faced multiple challenges as we set out to organise the T20 League and with the support of all stakeholders, we have managed to overcome all the challenges and deliver a successful tournament.” Sethi said that PSL’s biggest achievement was the level of transparency at each stage. “One of the biggest achievement in PSL was transparency. We followed the best international practices. There was no corruption. There was not even a hint of it.” He said with the entire nation supporting the PSL, the League proved to be a unifying factor for the country. “The PSL has given Pakistanis a national product that they can proudly own and the response that we have received from the fans has been phenomenal. The League has been instrumental in strengthening the process of national integration of the country. I would like to thank Pakistani fans all over the world. It is because of their support that we have succeeded,” said Sethi.

Speaking about the commercial aspect of HBL PSL, Sethi pointed out that the League’s commercial value had grown due to the tremendous response that it received from the fans. “HBL PSL’s TV ratings are comparable to Pakistan’s World Cup matches which is a huge achievement,” stated Sethi.

When asked about the financial aspect of the event, Sethi said that there was a lot of money in Pakistan and people were ready to splash it on cricket. “This year we had five teams and believe me I am receiving many offers from the people who want to buy the sixth franchise,” he said. “It is a win-win situation for Pakistan. We need to invest something to earn in future and signs look brighter for the PSL team owners. All the franchise owners are more than happy and they are ready to invest more money. The successful organisation has multiplied the value of their brand,” he added.

Sethi also commented on the Pakistan-India series saying that India owes Pakistan two home tours and the revenues of those series belong to Pakistan. “It is sad that the two giants of Asia are not playing bilateral cricket. First of all, India owes us our two home series and then we will tour India. We are ready to play our home series anywhere -UAE, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh- and the ball is in India’s court. I hope there may be a series between Pakistan and India in September. It will be our series and all the revenue will go to the PCB.”

He thanked all five franchise owners and their managements for successfully partnering with the PSL. He also thanked the sponsors for their support in making the tournament a huge success. He thanked Prime Minister of Pakistan, PCB Chairman, Board of Governors, PSL Governing Council and all members of the PSL team for their continued support.

man i can't wait for the next PSL wonder which 6th city they will add now i think it will be Sialkot. Don't know is it just me but after watching PSL aj ke match ki koi excitement ni ho rhi

I dont think sialkot would get a team. It might be either kashmir, GB or Multan in my opinion. The first two are obvious. The reason i said Multan is that south punjab/seraiki people want a team for themselves which they can proudly own.

TBH, i don't trust or like this Chirya wala baba but PSL is a great initiative and will remain a productive event until & unless is not involved with corruption or look at IPL. However, the additional team could be GB if we sees it thorough representing the areas or provinces so also bit of chance for FATA or may be both but i doubt about Kashmir team as long as the Mango and Sari diplomats are in Government that wouldn't attempt anything causing bad mood to their business partners.

It is a part of Pakistan, we claim all of J and K, no harm in making a team of Kashmir. Say a team of AJK is made, i can assure you the support will be as good as any. AJK team will get a lot of support.
