Setback for Kerala, panel says Mullaperiyar safe

And we offered the same amount of water to Tamilnadu from the newly built dam in future. but Tamilnadu wants to control the dam.

On Kerala's demand for construction of a new dam, the Empowered Committee said that in view of the age of the existing reservoir, building a new one could be considered as an alternative proposal. If a new dam was constructed, the maximum water level (MWL) should be fixed at 155 ft and a fresh agreement signed between the two States on water sharing and maintenance.

The Hindu : News / National : Mullaperiyar dam structurally & hydrologically safe: panel

I don't understand why TN is afraid of a new agreement, when our CM publicly said that Kerala doesn't need a drop of Mullaperiyar water.

Thats y we always demanding nationalization of rivers but wen it gng to materialize nobody knws.

Okay if we nationalize Mullaperiyar, do you in return nationalize the food products grown with the help of that water and on which Kerala depends to feed our population and also make sure wackos like Vaiko, Nedumaran etc will not try to starve Kerala by economic blockade.

TN and KL historically bound to each other apart frm recent water issue we are not having any problems with u . If water problem solved means everything come to end for sure.

Thats what I hear all the time, but at the drop of a hat Tamils (even lawyers) are ready to destroy Keralite properties in TN. More than that , TN politicians openly call for the violation of the territorial integrity of the Kerala state by calling for the breaking up of Idukki district.

Any ways thank you for the blockade, that caused a serous introspection in Kerala about our vulnerability on depending on neighbouring states for our food.

secondly we may pass resolution to deport all KL people frm TN and many things we can do then our integration would become question mark. Already ur govt. ruined the relationship I hope it won't worsen further. Bottomline accept and follow SC order that would be gud for both states we don't want problems with anyone.

Wonderful idea .... please inform me before doing that, will you ..... have some of my family their

Would like to know if anything other than SERIOUS introspection been done yet..??
Anything on paper.... or on ground?? :undecided:

The really sad part is that the one guy behaving funny about Kerala not following supreme court orders (theoretically of course) is the same chap who abused everyone else during a discussion on UN resolution about Sri Lanka. Then, he made no bones about his contempt for the rest of India & for India's institutions if they did not agree to his particular viewpoint. Now we are getting a lecture from him about how Kerala must do this or that or otherwise he is going to talk about secession again. Funny that this chap doesn't get it into his head that almost all waters flowing into TN flows through neighbouring states & if there wasn't a Indian Union to protect TN's rights, he might well be irrigating crops with his urine.

In any case, I think that the Supreme Court will decide based on the committee's recommendations & that Kerala must move on. I believe that we must learn to trust our institutions to make correct decisions even if sometimes we feel hard done by some of them. TN's politicians & some members here will have to learn a little grace in victory. After all, Kerala is your neighbour & it is not like you are on good terms with any of your neighbours. Trying to rub people's noses in something only guarantees more bitterness. Smart people would realise that quickly.

oh guys comeon discussing internal matter in a international forum that too on a forum of our rivals thing is absolutely non-sense...let the SC decide the matter just rest the case on this forum..get each others FB and bash it up personally...just please show some sense and dont discuss it here....

from what is heard, Tamil politicians have strong influence in Centre and these "Commission"'s attitude at Mullaperiyar was just a visit and stay with Tamilians who accompanied them.

then, these tamil politicos knows they will be lynched in public by nomadic tamils of madura and southern tamilnadu if dam water gets reduced. they fear the tribal people of southern tamilnadu will actually start violence if Mullaperiyar Dam water level is reduced. their culture is that of disbelief if another state is telling they will build a new dam on their soil ,give the water for, we want safety of our people. Tamil Bullying Centre is surely a reason for the defeat of Kerala's Stance in SC.

It is High time, Other Southern states return the favour We are bearing.

As far as I know Govt is actively encouraging terrace farming. Also as per 2012-13 budget, GoK plans to set up 3 green houses in each panchayat to increase vegetable and fruit production.

Cannot say more, but in this case even the river does not flow through TN. The water is diverted via Mullaperiyar dam to TN. The dam, the reserviour and the catchment area all falls under Kerala.

Kerala learnt its lesson from Mullaperiyar issue that we don't have the political might to counter a large state like TN. So we already said no to national river linking project.

Discussion isnt a problem.... should be encouraged in any platform it may be.... but the problem here i see is the guys being unreasonably high on emotions on a matter which could very well be settled amicabley and peacefully.
The people who put out immature comments are the ones having little knowledge on or connections with the other state....or simply the ones who havnt seen a world beyond their four walls and the colour sceen in front.

So its better to ignore the ones spreading hatred and move ahead on with a reasonable discussion.

Looking in to the larger picture may make things easy for Kerala to understand, most of the products cultivated from the use of the water those products goes to kerala, it benefits both of us. If the dam is safe to use and you do not need the water from that what is the point in all the fuss that is being created. Yes no doubt we are a water starved state and if you start creating problems like this how are we to survive?

Your question is quite simple, if the dam is safe and KL does not need water then why this problems?

The answer though the committee says it is safe 'now' without any further measures it cannot be safe for more long time, as it is already more than 100 years old which also states in the report.

Even if you build a new dam, the same also have some expiry date after which there should be an another dam. The point instead of handing a century old contract, lets move on and make a procedure/set up that even our grand children should not go through such situations.

Also there is a feeling in Kerala that TN not even care about our safety (even the committee says otherwise) and the property is ours.

The report also suggests to build a new dam which is a one of the permanent solution.
