Self Improvement thread

whenever possible when going out, carry a book... either something about a great or respectable person ( iqbal, alexander the great, bhagat singh, elon musk, fatima bhutto, naseeruddin shah etc ), or a good science fiction ( dune series, do androids dream of electric sheep etc )... it will enable engagement of people on two levels...

(a). to generally categorize yourself as a gentleman, not given to latest fashion... someone intelligent and trustworthy.

(b). people standing or sitting close to you will look at it at least once, and some will stare at the book... smile at them and offer them the book... that will begin a conversation... another ice breaker, this one... your target can be male or female, of any age... they should be of any economic class... a waiter or a company owner... be confident in talking to anyone, at any place... be calm... be respectful and listening to your target.

this is not specifically about flirting, but can be used with ladies for that purpose too... :-)

Yes- books are great conversation starters. One place I always tend to have a book on me is on a flight or in a airport. I've a met a lot of people that way- including my current boss!

Some of my favourite authors-you might enjoy them too- Naguib Mahfouz, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sunil Gangopadhyay (I read his books in Bengali but I think there are English translations available).

impressive... though i have not read any of them i know that mr. marquez had socialist leanings and that has put him in opposition with his best friend... i am correct, yes?? and i have heard the bbc radio dramatization of "love in the time of cholera", but that was many years back when i listened to bbc.

tomorrow, i will go pick up "100 years of solitude" at a good second-hand book store i know... naguib mahfouz also i will check.

past the age for improvement?? in that case you are either a sufi baba or a retired playboy... :D
When you have wife kids job you dont have time to put on self improvement-
The good thing is if you do all the improving before you reach that extremly busy and full of responsibilities time-

come on... improvement is for all time... i have seen middle-aged or elderly people being quite awkward socially.

I hope you realize being awkward socially has nothing to do with self improvement- these people are built that way- they dont feel like there is something in them that needs improvements- isn't realisation the first step of self improvement? - yeah it is-

i will give you a real situation... some years ago, i was standing in a bus station in bangalore waiting for the bus... a lady was walking on the internal road towards a platform... a bus suddenly came behind her... many people there but they didn't have the courage to call out to the lady... social awkwardness which could have killed the lady... i urgently gestured to her and said "bus".

you are right... realization is the first step to self-improvement... which is why i have written more than once that one should be confident in talking to others.
