Well SAARC is a regional version of economic bloc just in south east asia. The problem is that it has become irrelevant because of differences between India and Pakistan.

The SAARC from the start was a doomed preposition. The people in charge of cooperation, had issues that dominated any talks. India and Pakistan problems when they are brought into the SCO will not dominate the agenda since Russia and China will be there to set the meeting.

SAARC was never intended to be a political or geo-strategic entity in the first place. It was mostly to find common ground on several subjects like cultural exchanges , Drug trafficking , energy and trade co-operation.

But its true that the Pakistan -India embroglio put a damper on any significant progress.

SCO can only be effective as a geo-strategic entity for energy , counter-terrorism etc with both India and Pakistan in it if

1) Russia taking a more proactive role in world politics can persuade India to shed its non-aligned mentality once and for all to come completely in the SCO camp.

2) China taking a bold and resourceful step can completely strip Pakistan away from the U.S , and likewise persuade it to find common ground with India on many contentious issues of trade , terrorism , bilateral disputes etc .


Both of which are remarkably daunting tasks .....

Equal founding partners with China and Russia so let's not forget about them.

We all should work for a Eurasian Economic Union like the EU. Russia China India Pakistan = 4 most populated countries with endless young workforce , hundreds of Universities which can be embedded into a single educational system. All 4 have large well resourced militarilies and all share borders one way or the other , 2 of them are Veto powers , all have nuclear weapons.

Above mix can form the most powerful alliance ever created but its upto us to work for it.

Also, one important factor could be the role played by both China and Russia to make the imbecile leaders of India and Pakistan to make peace with each other, or at least a detante. Both of these countries have a high level of trust in Pakistan and India, respectively.
So why can't there be creative solutions like a demilitarized Siachen overseen by both Russian+Chinese troops deployed there to prevent any invasion by either India or Pakistan? Extend this principle further into the rest of the Kashmir in some form and, voila, the distrust of 60+ years will evaporate like the once-formidable Berlin Wall did in a mere a few days.
Sure, there could be border issues which need to be resolved but they will be resolved or even made 'irrelevant' once there is peace and prosperity in the region. Why fight over a damned glacier when you can use the saved resources to line up the water canals, make billions in trade/transit, have cheaper and reliable energy...?

And Russia also will be subjected to same question so there will be platform to bring any kind of agreement over intelligence sharing against terrorism and extremism and we need this mutual sharing agreement at this time more over it will help Pakistan more than Russian from Pakistan.

Well known political analyist Parag Khanna, says that SCO is sometimes called NATO of the east.
check out his article, I knows its old since its from 2008, but its worth a read for all Russians, Pakistanis, Chinese, Indians and ofcourse (Central Asians + Afghanistanis).
