Saudi King Salman's meeting on Friday with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal was part of an effort by Riyadh to shore up Arab unity in the face of a perceived threat from Iran that it believes has become more urgent since last week's nuclear deal.

Saudi Arabia, a conservative Sunni Muslim monarchy, has grown more aggressive this year in countering Shi'ite, revolutionary Iran across the region, believing its influence to be the main cause of instability and insecurity in Arab states.

Riyadh fears the agreement Tehran struck with six world powers to release it from sanctions in return for more intrusive inspections of its atomic facilities will free Iran to increase its support for Saudi Arabia's enemies in Arab countries.

"It's part of the grand strategy of countering Iranian influence. It's the main issue for Saudi Arabia and it's more urgent after the nuclear deal," said Mustafa Alani, an Iraqi analyst close to the Saudi Interior Ministry.

Since Salman became king in January, he has tried to build a Sunni coalition against Iran's regional allies, boosting support for rebels against Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and waging war against Yemen's Houthi militia.

The Saudis have for years regarded Hamas with intense suspicion because the Palestinian militant group is both a traditional ally of Iran and also an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement Riyadh has often seen as a threat.

Although the Brotherhood, like Saudi Arabia, is Sunni, Riyadh distrusts it because it combines a call to conservative religious values that might appeal to the kingdom's citizens with demands to replace dynastic rule with elections.

Salman's predecessor Abdullah put the Brotherhood on a list of terrorist organizations and backed Egypt's crackdown on the group, a policy that caused tension with Turkey and Qatar, its two main allies in fighting Iranian influence in Syria and Iraq.

Salman, while stopping short of befriending the Brotherhood, has worked to reduce tensions with the movement's own allies, strengthening Riyadh's ties with Ankara and Doha and reaching out to Islah, the Islamist group's offshoot in Yemen.

CONFRONTATIONAL MOOD

"Saudi Arabia is in a confrontational mood against Iran and its in the business of gathering as many allies as possible. So if they reach out to Malaysia or reach out to Hamas, it's the same. It's to create as many allies as possible," said Jamal Khashoggi, head of al-Arab news channel, owned by a Saudi prince.

By building ties with Hamas, Riyadh might reduce tensions with Brotherhood allies and make it harder for Iran to present itself as the region's main defender of Palestinian resistance, and Saudi Arabia as covertly supporting Israel.

It also improves the chances Riyadh can help mediate a rapprochement between Hamas and the main Palestinian party, Fatah, potentially ending a split that has obstructed a push for statehood and led to recriminations around the region.

During last year's Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, Saudi Arabia waited three weeks before condemning the Jewish state's offensive and some newspapers close to the ruling family blamed the Palestinian group for provoking the fighting.

Anger over the plight of Palestinians and the failure of Arab governments to create a state has for decades driven much opposition to the region's rulers, particularly among Islamists who frame the Palestinian cause in terms of Muslim solidarity.

Meanwhile, by putting longstanding differences over political Islam on the backburner, Salman is strengthening ties with both Turkey, whose ruling AK Party is linked to the Brotherhood, and Qatar, which has given the group sanctuary.

Improved cooperation between the trio, the three countries most involved in supporting Syrian rebel groups, was credited earlier this year for opposition victories in Aleppo and the outskirts of Damascus.

INSIDIOUS THREAT

Profound splits between the Middle East's Sunni states over political Islam linger, however, with both Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, core members of Saudi Arabia's coalition against the Houthis in Yemen, resolutely opposed to the Brotherhood.

Saudi Arabia's ruling princes themselves continue to look on the movement unfavourably. They recall how Riyadh offered sanctuary to its members during a 1960s purge in Egypt, and how they later backed a 1990s Islamist opposition movement against the ruling Al Saud.

Prince Nayef, the late veteran interior minister, elder full brother of King Salman and father of the current crown prince, once described the movement as "the source of all our problems in the Arab world".

While many of his living relatives still the see the group's secretive political activities and religious credentials as an insidious threat to their rule, it is Iran that they see posing the more immediate danger.

Riyadh hopes its new formula of tolerating the movement's activities outside Gulf countries, coupled with its support for Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, will keep both countries engaged in its wider struggle against Iran.

"The understanding with the Muslim Brotherhood now is that it will not be active inside Saudi Arabia or interfere in Gulf states. It's important that they understand these new rules of the game," said Alani.

Lol the removal of sanctions as per nuclear deal has started to show its results and after effects

. .
Being both anti Iran and anti Muslim Brotherhood makes no sense as in Syria and Yemen it's one or the other.

.
Arabia as homeland of Arabs and Islam and in last 25 years Saudi regime has done it best to destroy the Arab countries and create wars in Muslim countries. The Saudi Wahhabi family is responsible for many ills in the Middle East.

Hamas has distanced itself from Iran after 2010 but the yesterday car bombing inside Gaza is to put pressure on Hamas.

Palestinians stand around a vehicle destroyed in blast in Gaza City. At least four explosions rocked Gaza City early Sunday, targeting vehicles belonging to officials from Islamic factions, including the territorys Hamas rulers. There was no claim of responsibility, but speculation immediately centered on supporters of the Islamic State group, who have been battling with Hamas and other Islamic groups in the small coastal strip.

Hamas needs to completely cut ties with Iran sooner or later. This is for a number of reasons:

1. Iran's agenda in region has centralized around it's national interests of solely aiding Shia movements in the Gulf and Levant which is causing controversy but also means Palestinian issue is minor to them. Therefore this relationship will just serve to demonize Hamas in Arab world.

2. Iran's support has already minimized, and Iran is instead funneling much funds to a small Shia group in Gaza. It gives them money to go around poor peoples homes promising them financial help if they embrace Shia sect. This tampering with our culture and religious beliefs is unacceptable and completely rejected by our society.

3. Even if you remain having ties, Iran doesn't find you important and will allocate minor military resources to you that can't cause drastic improvement in capabilities. Hamas largely will remain at same power level it has had since 2012. The only power increase occurred during Morsi/Mubarak era.

4. Increasingly dangerous ethnic war(Persians/Arabs) is becoming controversial and no longer limited to political sentiments. It has become ideological struggle as well. And as Sunni Arabs we are inclined towards Saudi Arabia.

Especially since Iran is solely trying to keep hold on Gaza in order to spread it's twelver ideology. Even if it cut ties with Hamas, it won't leave Gaza alone and instead try forcing Shiasm on it. It even favors this tiny Shia group over Islamic jihad. This little groups supporters mainly come from shias in Iraq and Iran.

Now to address Saudi Hamas meetings...

Saudi Arabia is purseuing new logical policy which I have been demanding from Arab nations for a long time. All Arab nations besides Qatar , Saudi Arabia and Egypt are insignificant politically. Qatar being a tiny nation, has managed plenty of influence in region and at least tried on its own to lead initiative in Arab world. It has been successful. Especially during MB rule of Egypt. However folllowing coup, it's role has been limited. And following Saudi Arabian succession, Saudi Arabia sought to fill this gap. Saudi Arabia understands what causes our young men to resort to extremism. It wants our young men to look up to a powerful and influential nation that shares same culture and beliefs. And not look up towards Iran.

Therefore it is trying to reach out to all Arab Sunnis and place itself as leader of Arab world. And being birthplace of Islam, we would love for Saudi Arabia to lead us. With the new leadership, they are aiming for that goal. And we are proud of them. However, Egypt is a giant obstacle in the new agenda in Arab world to counter Iran and unite Sunnis under Saudi banner. Egypt prefers Assad regime and opposes Hamas. It also opposes other Islamists. This causes complications to achieving a new era in the region. If Saudi Arabia can overcome this, we will see genuine change. And regarding Hamas, trust me they want to move away from Iran if given opportunity.

I do wonder who is behind this, Salman or the younger Defense minister? I feel like the defense minister shares new generations concerns and aspirations and he has the courage to take a stand and restore our dignity. Hopefully this is the case.

And while it's too early to tell what will come out it, it's a step in right direction. Saudi Arabia needs to give middle finger to arrogant nations Egypt and Jordan who think world revolves around them that don't give a hoot about Iran's expanismion in region nor our other enemies conspiracies against us. They want us to be pacisifst and sit back get screwed by whole world while the dumb arrogant Egyptian and Jordanian scum boast of their identity(Jordan Hashemites) and past civilizations(Pharoahs). Bottomline is you people are careless and have terrible political views which are no longer susitanable and you need to gtfo the way and let someone else lead.

It has less to do with Iran deal (that will bear fruit in no less than three years if at all) and more with the new King of KSA, who is different than his predecessor in approach towards Palestine and Egypt.

@Saif al-Arab

.
Btw, reports that Saudi asked Hamas for participation in Yemen are false. Hamas has no experience in mountain wafare, Saudi Arabia meanwhile has plenty. Hamas has very limited manpower and can't allocate fighters out of Palestine and never has. The reports mention Saudi needs them for Aden, this is completely false as Aden was liberated in recent Saudi led operation that was successful.

With that said, expect more Houthi losses and opposition gains in Yemen which Iranians will blame on Hamas since in their brainwashed heads Saudis are lizard eating dumb bediouns who can't solve basic math problems. And they will never accept that Saudis can outsmart them.

All Hamas employees have gone without salaries for a year now, if they cared for money the government/armed wing would collapse by now and they wouldve joined Fatah. That didn't happen though.

Egypt is no longer important, it is sidelined in all Arab political affairs and is considered an annoyance. Sisi has no contact with Sinai inhabitants with exception of sending them bombs. He has no influence on them and can't stop their trade with Gaza.

Your tourism is doing bad because your government doesn't convert neighorhoods near pyramids into store galores. Egypt without tourism is nothing.
