ABU DHABI, Feb 17 (Reuters) - State-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) and France’s Naval Group signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday to form a joint venture to produce and develop naval systems.

The two companies plan to manufacture warships, frigates, and submarines in Saudi Arabia, SAMI’s Chief Executive Andreas Schwer said.

SAMI, launched by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund in 2017, will hold 51 percent of the joint venture.

“Through design, construction and maintenance activities the joint venture will contribute significantly to further enhancing the capabilities and readiness of Royal Saudi Naval Forces,” Schwer said. (Reporting by Stanley Carvalho; Writing by Nafisa Eltahir; Editing by Mark Potter)

I think Saudi should invest in commodity , rather in sluggish defence industry. If French convince them for prospects of expected customers in future.

KSA is investing in its defence industry by localising TOT of warships, frigates and..Submarines to fulfill its own needs first..if there are customers along the line..so why not!
Investing in commodities is what Saudi Arabia was doing for decades..nothing new here..

The same guys that were arrested in KSA and same sanctions by the US.. That problem was resolved..
I am actually surprised how quick French were to basically change their narrative

There was nothing to change.. they talked about sanctioning 18 Saudis implicated in the case after KSA has arrested them.. so their position or narrative if you want did not change.. and did not have to..

OT:
Naval group has a long relationship with Saudi Arabia.. many high quality Saudi frigates were built by DCNS now called Naval group..so, a lot of sales, upgrades, maintenance and services over decades.. this is just the culmination of that particular relationship..

A lot of tough talk from them and Germans now this is a bit surprising

Mostly from the Germans.. the French narrative was moderate, they said they couldn't comment before things were clearer..and when the case was cleared, they've sanctioned the arrested responsible guys..
Germany's case is unique in Europe.. they have always refused to sell important weapons to KSA (Tanks and Submarines), decades before any such Kashoggi case.. hiding behind human rights while supplying Usrael with the latest technologically available submarines with the capability to launch nuclear cruise missiles..when they are killing Palestinians by the hundreds, implanting settlements on what is left from Palestinian lands, attacking Syria...so what human rights is Germany talking about? ..the French are more frank and more balanced in their policies, as well as the UK and most of the other EU countries..so go figure about Germany's real motives..And when it comes to civilian technologies, they do sell everything to KSA..

A good move. Go to even China to learn skills and trades...
KSA did go to China for many civilian and military technologies..
