Saudi Arabia said on Monday Iran was not eligible to attend the Geneva 2 peace talks on Syria, following the U.N. invite to Tehran to attend the conference later this week.

"Iran is not eligible to attend. Inviting any party to the Geneva 2 talks is dependent on their support of a transitional government,” a statement from the Saudi government read, broadcast by Al Arabiya News Channel.

“Iran has not voiced its support for a transitional Syrian government and has troops fighting alongside [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad," the statement added.

The Syrian opposition threatened on Sunday to pull out from upcoming peace talks with global powers and the Syrian regime after the U.N. invited Iran to attend the conference.

U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon said Iran had pledged in the talks, due to start on Wednesday in the Swiss town of Montreux, to play a “positive and constructive role” in efforts to end Syria’s civil war.

But the announcement prompted the Syrian National Coalition to warn that it may withdraw from from the negotiations. It warned that it would not attend unless the invitation was retracted.

The Syrian National Coalition had only decided on Saturday to attend the conference and talks between Assad’s government and the opposition are due to start in Geneva on Friday.

Spokesman Louay Safi announced on the coalition’s Twitter account that the opposition group would withdraw “unless Ban Ki-moon retracts Iran’s invitation.”

The United States also said Ban should withdraw the invitation unless Iran, a key backer of Assad, gives “explicit” support to the conference aim of setting up a transitional government in Syria.

Following the dramatic series of events, Iran said it will attend Syrian peace talks this week in Switzerland but without preconditions, foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham told the official IRNA news agency.

"Based on the official invitation, Iran will participate in this conference without any preconditions," Afkham was quoted as saying.

Yep, if Iran wants to be "eligible" it should support Al-Qaeda affiliates like Saudi and the rest :)

No, If Iran want to be eligible it should stop supporting war criminals, mass murderers and dictators like Asshead and his regime who kill his people with all kinds of weapons including chemical weapons,,,

And btw, Iran already support Al-Qaeda

If you're a logical person, you would agree that none of the involved countries are worried about the "genocide" that is happening in Syria, its a political game, they basically want to take Bashar away to further isolate Iran, that is A FACT, had these countries really been worried about a genocide they would have acted when Saddam used chemical weapons on Iranians as well as on his own people. You further contributed to deaths by supporting a group that is considered "terrorist" by the ruling party of Syria, what would happen if Shiites in Saudi tried to overthrow the House of Saud? They would all get slaughtered? Of course.

Saudi regime doesn't even tolerate peaceful protests, let alone an armed rebellion, so I'm sorry if I don't take your humanitarian view of the conflict very seriously.

That Al-Qaeda allegation is pure nonsense, Al-Qaeda considers Shiites as apostates, I can find thousands of links that strongly relates Saudi to Al-Qaeda but only fairy tales about an imaginary relation between Iran and Al-Qaeda.

Saudi Arabia talks big because the u.s. army is on their soil protecting them. In a one on one war Iran would defeat Saudi Arabia very easily.

Last time Iran went to war, they lost 800k

You didn't stand a chance against your enemies at time where you had everything in hand to flinch them. Don't expect your country to protect its people in a time where they're as fragile as they're now.

Lol, I'm not even an Iranian. But you Saudis need Iran for an excuse to change the subject away from Saudi crimes. You Saudis should be happy Iran exists or who else would you have left to use as a whipping boy on the Internet ?

If anyone but KSA had said it, I would at least consider thinking about what has been said, but the term 'not eligible' coming from Saudi Arabia, is something beyond hilarious, being itself the largest supplier of funds to various mercenaries and rebels fighting in Syria.

But jokes do exist in political world too, this is one of them, and it was a good one. Thank you really Saudi Arabia.

You were the one who brought Iran to the discussion. Nice retreat.

You were the one who brought up Iran first but now because you heard something you didn't like you switched into the defensive mode.

I don't give a rat about what you came from. Wether you happen to be an Iranian or not, the bottom line is you need to pull yourself back into reality.

Once upon a time three Iranian jets violated Saudi Arabia air space. The pilots were sent back to Iran in coffins. :triniti:
Once upon time we fired scud missiles at Riyadh and you couldn't do anything you begged mommy america to protect you from us we fired 39 scud on israel and we challenged you to fire the 40th missile at israel but now after 24 years you couldn't do it:lol:
