Saudi Arabia: Empty promises as crackdown intensifies l Amnesty International.

@al-Hasani |

I wish all the best for KSA and its people, i always have.

For the sake of debate, i believe that its important to highlight such issues so they can be talked about and get them out there for people to think about. That is how civil societies work.

For the issue of illegal immigration, KSA govt has EVERY RIGHT to clean up its market for reasons of its own. It also has a responsibility to provide reasonable employment for its own citizens.

My issue is that if a developed nation like KSA starts doing migration and labor reforms in an non-orderly fashion other states will follow suit. KSA must take care of the people that are already there on its soil, put them through legal checks and deport them humanely instead of detaining them for unspecified periods of time.

It also needs to find and punish saudi citizens that are engaged in exploiting the vulnerable people who at most care about proving everyday food for their kids back home.

Thank you.

I would like to inform you that many Saudi Arabians are in favor of reforms in terms of the system of hosting migrant workers. And even a larger part has no experience with foreigners so they don't really fully know what happens when the evil persons are behaving like savages by stealing the passports of individual x or y. Many Saudi Arabians are working under similar conditions for Saudi Arabians. The only difference is that they are fellow citizens. KSA is no UAE where all locals are very rich and can afford hiring foreigners to do anything if that is what they want to do. Yes, KSA is a rich and largely fully developed country but much of the countries wealth is in the hands of a few selected people/firms/families while the remaining ones are what you would call a middle class. And no, I am not making a secret now that what is considered the middle class in KSA is probably considered rich in most Arab and Muslim countries or at least close to that. But were no Qatar, Kuwait, UAE. For a lot of reasons. Mainly because we are a much, much bigger, diverse and complex state than all those 3 and our citizens are not as rich per capita.

I can recommend you to read Saudi Arabian media such as Arab News and Saudi Gazette. Both in English and both objective. They don't hide unfortunate cases from the limelight. Both uses writers from abroad and the authors/journalists are often critical of many issues and do not fear to raise them which I believe is a good thing. In order to improve a society the demons of it need to be addressed not hidden. The sooner the better. Actually this very own discussion we have right now have even been raised. Not once but many times in the last few years.
I agree with everything you say. Very much even. Especially the last part.

This article needs to posted here, it contains lots of detail regarding the crackdown on illegal expatriates.

Amnesty ends; all-out raid begins

“All expatriates who work for their personal gain or overstayed their Haj, Umrah, and visit visas and infiltrators will be caught and will be detained until completing legal procedures for penal measures and deportation. The campaign also aims at catching Saudis who employ illegal residents or those who leave their workers to find job on their own.

“Those who cover up illegals or those who give them shelter or transportation or any kind of help will also be apprehended,” he said, adding, that those who recruited foreigners and then did not report their overstay will also face penal action.

Abuthnain said that there won’t be any offensive conduct by inspection teams. “The inspection campaign will be carried out in cooperation and coordination with the concerned security authorities, and it will be based on decent and civilized behavior. The inspectors have been directed to perform their mission in a professional way and not to do anything that might hurt the feelings of workers and their employers or damage the reputation of institutions,” he said.

There were claims of abuse last time with Iqamas being snipped, harsh treatment, et cetera, but such incidents haven't occurred this time as far as I know. Every incident or social issue here isn't talked about in the media anyway, knowledge of that is required by interacting & living in the society. Certain problems that were brought up as a result of the inspections such as permission for expatriates' house wives to work have already been resolved. Anyway, the process should go more smoothly this time around. Besides, the legal expatriates don't have much if anything to worry about anyway.

Thousands of Pakistanis along with Indians,Bangladeshis,Yamenis and others are at the risk of torture and imprisonment.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that some Pakistani prisoners have set themselves on fire in protest. No media reports as expected.

I hope, our Prime minister Mr Nawaz Sharif al-Saud has time for these slaves.

This is not correct. Please fix the post.
Everyone is being dealt equally here; and only people who entered the Kingdom ILLEGALLY are being deported.

Please remain objective and not give in to Shia News.
