The ship can carry 4 MH-60 / NH-90 helicopters, and in the case of the Spanish Navy it operates 4 SH-3D helicopters or 6 Bell 212 according to the mission..It is a 13000 tons warship.

First reaction was "well, why? When you have a pair of mistrals that can carry 16" helos each and operate as an LHD as well?" But the answer is pretty obvious, at least in Egypt's case as many times they won't need to send an entire mistral and run its cost for smaller missions that don't require such large ships.

Egypt's naval needs have really come to light in the last 10 years or so. They've been important since the creation of the Suez Canal, but with the gas discoveries of the last 10 years and the tensions in the area, naval protection has only gotten more extensive for really almost every county in the region.

Navy is fundamental to any nation but in times of peace and hectic times. I am unfamiliar with Navantia tho
