Saddled with Insas Army wants new AK-47s

No; Thats not a good excuse;

India started the rifle project way before rockets or ballestic missiles.

And don't tell me India need 50 years of experience to make your

own rifle.

The Indian armed forces had been equipped with an unlicensed reverse-engineered copy of the famous Belgian FN FAL rifle since the 1950s. This copy is considered to be a distinct weapon (although certainly not an original design), since its parts cannot be interchanged with either the metric or inch-pattern versions of the FAL.[1]With the 7.62 mm self-loading rifle becoming obsolete in the 1980s, India began to develop the INSAS, incorporating features from several contemporary rifle designs. Although largely based on the ever-popular AK-47, the INSAS has a number of differences, making it a unique weapon. It has features borrowed from the FN FNC, the AK-74, the IMI Galil and the G3.

City-based Armaments Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) is giving the final touches to a modern sub-machine carbine (MSMC) for the Indian Army. The final trials for this 5.56 mm calibre MSMC will be conducted in December this year.

A carbine is a lightweight compact automatic gun with a small barrel; unlike a rifle it fires rapidly and is suitable for close quarter combats.

At present, the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, commandos and the police use a Russian origin 9 mm calibre carbine, which is fairly ancient.

“We are in the process of proving 99.7 per cent reliability for the MSMC. The user will be able to fire up to 200 metres using the MSMC,” said ARDE director Anil M Datar.

The MSMC programme has its origins in the Indian Small Arms System family, which was started in 1982 in a bid to build an indigenous small arms weapons system for India. By 1987, the ARDE had designed the Rifle, the Light Machine Gun (LMG) and the carbine — all part of the INSAS family.

The Army had inducted the INSAS rifle and LMG in 1993; DRDO scientists say it met with a fair amount of success but there were some defects as well, which came to light after the Kargil war.

“The rifle and the LMG was first put to test during Kargil. After that, based on the battlefield experiences, we developed a new version — the INSAS 1B1” said R S Rao, joint director, INSAS, ARDE.

But it was the INSAS carbine that fell through, right from the start. “For the carbine, the ammunition was very powerful. It had higher sound, flash, and recoil effect,” said S V Gade, joint director, INSAS, ARDE. “With the MSMC, we have now changed the length of the ammunition. It is still a 5.6 mm calibre bullet, but it is slightly shorter in length, thereby eliminating the drawbacks of the earlier carbine.”

Finally, the INSAS carbine plan was shelved and in 2002, the Army devised a new set of General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQR) for the new MSMC, he said.

“Since 2006, when the first prototype was devised, the MSMC has been put through every possible scenario that the Army could conceive of.”

The first trial of the prototype was held in 2006, then 2007-end and the last one was in January 2009.

join; Lets stick to the topic, India started to unlicensed reverse

engineer the Belgian FN FAL rifle in the 50s.

Now we are in 2009= 59 years.

But India still can't produce her own decent rifle till now.

Whats the problem ?:smitten::pakistan::china:

Its a prototype only; Indians had made a lot of prototype for rifles,

So far, nothing except the ineffective Insas was under mass

production. :smitten::pakistan::china:

First you said that india is not capable to build a good assault rifle, now u say India has built a lot of prototype, This clearly states that You are rolling where you fell... Get up...:cheers: ...

A simple answer to you;

Why Indian Army ask for AK-47 if India is producing MSMC to replace

Insas rifles ? Thats the TOPIC !!:smitten::pakistan::china:

Well an illogical question but I dont mind giving answers to such questions...

Your answer: First, You cannot replace INSAS at a time , so U need an alternative. And U replace batch by batch. And every rifle is of best use in the specific combat zones and combat type... And Moreover, India is not only purchasing AK47... But also Many other..

And Army want AK-47 because its better than INSAS, Till The army gets MSMC.. simple, any problem with that?

join don't get stuck. it is true that we haven't designed a classy rifle so far. it's time to start some really kiss *** rifle project for future requirement.
actually my self designed a rifle, i am little bit confused about working principle but if it does. it is going to revolutionize the world of rifles specially counter insurgency and special forces cause it is not gas operated and without bolt action.

i hope there will be lots of people like me in india. if i ll be able to get patent, i ll be rich:victory::chilli:

Meaning present INSAS is not in good shape & IA wants AK, so whole idea of making INSAS & using & reducing dependence in foreign rifles is flawed, i don't think so ....
