Russia’s search for new ground in Pakistan

Russia is all set to rebuild its relations with Pakistan, a move that could be a game-changer for both Pakistan and South Asia. Given the dynamic strategic parameters in South Asia and a policy transition that might overcome the long drawn US-Russia Cold War rivalry that had also disconnected Russia from Pakistan, Moscow is now busy resetting the balance of power in South Asia. What induces this new attitude? Does the move lead to derail the Russian proximity with India? Is Moscow making a wrong choice?

The Russian experiment with Pakistan is purely a product of Moscow’s emerging strategic calculus. Moscow’s move could also be read as a sign of proscribing the growing rapprochement between Washington and New Delhi. Through this move, Kremlin seems to be signaling to India to reconsider its increasing camaraderie with the US and to re-tilt relations in Russia’s favour.

Moscow’s refusal to call off its first-ever bilateral military exercise with Pakistan on India’s request, following the terrorist attack on the military base in Uri in September 2016, revealed the change in Moscow’s psyche.

In another instance of this change, at the Heart of Asia conference held in Amritsar, India, on 3 and 4 December 2016, the Russian Envoy disapproved of branding Pakistan as a “terrorism-sponsoring state.” Similarly at the October 2016 BRICS Summit in Goa, India, Russian President Vladimir Putin made no mention of Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism which India had specifically emphasised upon at the meeting.

However, Moscow’s policy is also indicative of the vitality it associates to Islamabad’s cooperation in the efforts to stabilise Afghanistan. Kabul’s stability is an add-on to peace in Central Asia.

Russia’s hunt for sprawling markets in the region to sell Russian-manufactured goods is threatened by the political instability and the dangerous security situation in Afghanistan. While Pakistan will play an indispensable role in the Afghan peace process, Russia can also take Pakistan’s help to leverage its commercial linkages in the region in the long run.

Turkey and Iran are on opposing sides in Iraq and Syria
Turkey is NATO member. If the Turks are serious they will quit NATO. Otherwise all this is mindless speculation
Turkey is also cooperating with KSA, Qatar and Pakistan on different issues including terrorism and these countries are non-NATO countries. does this means that Turkey has to leave NATO to cooperate with these countries?

Turkey will remain in NATO and will also Cooperate with Pakistan, China, Iran and Russia..

It depends on the kind of co-operation with Russia and China

NATO is a military alliance against Russia. It does not preclude member states from having friendly relations with Russia. KSA and Qatar are American allies in certain sense. Pakistan is not anti-American as Pakistanis would portray it.

Why not...Russia already has ground in China, India's top enemy country....If they add Pakistan too, it should be fine..initially there will be some voices from Indian media but eventually it will settle down....If you look at India, we have good relationship with Iran and Israel...we have good relationship with Russia and US....So why can't Russia have good relationship with Pakistan? !

True, Pakistan should also strive for good relations with US along with China and Russia.

ok. lets just take KSA,Qatar and Pakistan out of this discussion becasue of their friendlier relation with USA.

Turkey is the one of biggest trade partner of Russia and Russians are the biggest foreign tourists to Turkey.
NATO is a military alliance but it cannot stop any of the member to not cooperate with any country on terrorism...
Even NATO members are harboring the terrorists with Turkey is actively fighting...

Me karoon tou sala Character dela hai.. Hypocrite..

You don't have to quit anything to have good relations with someone. Mr. Trump wants good relationships with Russia too, and at the end, he'll run NATO however he'd like to :enjoy:. NATO doesn't have a choice here or even the ability to say no to a US President.

You are a wise man. Good question. Sad part is, people from your country, just write posts out of bias and hate and they don't make common sense.

Pakistan and Russia can have a working relationship. Let us be realistic about what the relationship is about.

Russia has no need for the "warm water port" of Gwadar. How are they going to connect to Gwadar without going through China.

Pakistan is no position to place multi-billion dollar weapon deals India does

Russia has no interests in Afghanistan other than seeing the Americans out

Russia has more interests in Iran than Pakistan. I am assuming not-so warm relationship between Pakistan and Iran continues

Getting too close to Pakistan Russia would risk potential future deals in billions of dollars with India - weapons, nuclear reactors

Some of the chatter on the internet is saying that it is the Chinese deep pockets which are making Russia cozying up to Pakistan a bit?

As for Russia wanting Americans out of Afghanistan--that's what Pakistan too want especially when whatever pitiful 'aid' is cut off to Pakistan. And when Americans leave Afghanistan then Pakistan's strategic options in Afghanistan will likely increase at the expense of India's. Am I right?
