Russian Deputy PM Visits Pakistan to Boost Bilateral Ties​

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to Pakistan, accompanied by a high-level delegation. The visit aims to enhance bilateral ties, particularly in trade, energy, and connectivity.

Strengthening Economic Cooperation​

During the visit, Overchuk met with key Pakistani leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister. The discussions focused on boosting cooperation in various critical sectors, reflecting the growing trust and goodwill between Russia and Pakistan.

Expanding Trade and Investment​

Pakistan's bilateral trade with Russia reached an unprecedented $1 billion last year. The countries are committed to expanding trade ties by addressing logistical and related issues. Both sides agreed to pursue robust dialogue and cooperation in areas of trade, industry, energy, connectivity, science, technology and education.

Cooperation in the Energy Sector​

Over the past year, Pakistan has turned to Russian energy supplies to mitigate the effects of rising global fuel prices. In September 2023, Pakistan received its first shipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Russia, marking a milestone in their energy collaboration.

Support for Pakistan's BRICS Membership Bid​

During the visit, Overchuk announced that Russia will support Pakistan's bid to join the BRICS bloc of developing economies. Pakistan submitted its application for BRICS membership last year, aiming to enhance the representation of significant developing nations.

Strengthening Defense Ties​

Russia's Overchuk also met with General Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan's army chief. Both sides reiterated Pakistan's commitment to fostering traditional defense ties with Russia and reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen security and defense cooperation in multiple domains.The visit by the Russian Deputy Prime Minister underscores the growing partnership between Russia and Pakistan, particularly in the economic and energy sectors. As the discussions progress, both nations aim to further solidify their cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration.
