ISLAMABAD: Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived on a day-long visit to Pakistan on Thursday which is aimed at discussing bilateral defence cooperation with the Pakistani leadership.

During his short stay in Islamabad, the Russian defence minister would meet Prime Minister Nawaz at his official residence in the federal capital and discuss issues related to security and defence cooperation between Pakistan and the Russia.

Both sides are expected to sign an important memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation. This will be the first visit to Pakistan by a Russian defence minister in recent past.

Russia and Pakistan have lately been working on enhancing defence cooperation and are believed to have already covered a lot of ground. Exchange of visits by military commanders in recent years is an indication of progress achieved in this regard.

India’s decision to enter into tighter embrace with the US had prompted Russia to rethink its defence relationship with Pakistan.

The visit also comes against the backdrop of reports that Moscow had given go-ahead for sale of MI-35 helicopters to Pakistan, which is interested in purchasing up to 20 helicopters.

Russia acknowledges Pakistan's efforts countering terrorism
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Asif held formal talks at the Ministry of Defence in Rawalpindi.

Official sources told Dawn that during the meeting, Pakistan apprised the Russian defence minister about recent security situation in the region including the country's fight against terrorists and post-withdrawal of Nato-US forces from Afghanistan and the situation with India at the Line of Control (LoC).

Both the ministers agreed that bilateral cooperation between Russia and Pakistan in the field of security and defence needs to be further enhanced.

Shoigu lauded Pakistan's efforts in countering terrorism and said Russia acknowledged sacrifices made by the people of Pakistan and its security forces.

. .
How important can this visit be when the COAS is abroad?

. .
COAS in talks for left over defence equipment in Afghanistan and also negotiating the possible security of TAPI. Only Pak army can make it secure and possible with right equipment with full US backup. Its corporate world.

. . . .
Very, being right next to the rival of the Defence minister gives a nice "we'll end up with those guys if you dont give us what we want".

Actually, that simply won't work, Sir. The COAS will get some of what he wants, not all, no matter what he says in DC.

. . .
Perhaps all was never the goal, you throw your cards on the table and take those winnings that you can from the Casino.

General Sharif knows how the game is played Sir, very well. Neither he nor the Pentagon will show all their cards. Both sides will get some of what they want in return.

Pakistan, Russia deepen defence ties with military cooperation agreement
Thursday, 20 November 2014 - 8:43pm IST | Agency: PTI

Pakistan and Russia today signed a military cooperation agreement to deepen their defence ties and vowed to translate their relationship in "tangible" terms during the first-ever visit of a Russian defence minister in 45 years. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's visit to Pakistan comes at a very critical juncture as US-led NATO forces are drawing down from Afghanistan by the end of this year.

"The signing of the Military Cooperation agreement between the two significant countries of the region is a milestone. Both sides will translate this relationship in tangible terms and further strengthen military-to-military relations," said Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif without elaborating on the agreement.

He said strong ties between Pakistan and Russia will help in building stability andprosperity in the region. "We shared views on the scope of pressing problems of international and regional security. First of all, this concerns Afghanistan. Our assessments of the situation in that country are mainly close or coincide," Shoigu said.

The visit by the Russian Defence Minister comes against the backdrop of reports thatMoscow had given go-ahead for the sale of MI-35 helicopters to Pakistan, which is interested in purchasing up to 20 helicopters. The last visit took place as far back as 1969, when USSR Defense Minister Andrey Grechko made a trip to the country. A defence source told Dawn that Russia was unlikely to make any major announcement during Shoigu's trip because of President Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi next month.

Both sides expressed hope the agreement will pave the way for exchange of information on politico-military and other issues. "Both Pakistan and Russia stressed on continuation of momentum gained during Moscow Conference and expressed satisfaction over convergence of views on most international and trans-regional issues," said Pakistan's Defence Ministry. The two defence ministers held detailed discussion to improve cooperation in defence.
