why do they even go to those killer mountains?

Human spirit. Drive. Quest for adventure. Competitive energy. Nations that nurture these characteristics rise to the top. Apathy. Laziness. No dare. Nations which suffer from these afflictions drop to the bottom.

What positive benefit does it accrue? Well it was the same drive that compelled a certain Colombo to discovering Americas, same drive that led to Australia being discovered, same drive that led to Europe spreading it;s tentacles across the globe, same drive that underpinned other discoveries. Indeed there is a direct correlation between the climbers nationalties and success of those countries. Often they will be from Europe, Russia, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan etc

And before any of you penny pinchers start complaining of cost think about this. Pakistan gets terrible international coverage all for the wrong reasons. For every dollar spent on these rescues it gives 10 times more return in the positve image it renders. It's for that reason that Gen. Bajwa even has gone to see the rescued climber. He knows Russian media will have picked up on that. Think how much it would cost to hire public relations and media time to give Pakistan a positive image?
