Seriously dude? With almost 20 Million Ukrainian refugees, $500 billion in damage to towns and cities, 200,000 dead and wounded , militarily Ukraine is on the backfoot with its forces getting hammered in Bakhmut, not sure how you can define Russian army as 'inept'?

The Ukrainians are not on the back foot, they had trouble near the beginning, but they've since stabilized their situation.

The Russians are 100% inept.

The Russians themselves admit that they're getting hammered in Bakhmut, or are we gonna ignore all of Prigozhin's complaints of dead soldiers due to a lack of ammo?

After almost a year, the Russians still haven't managed to take Bakhmut, even after throwing tens of thousands of soldiers at the city.

Swap Bakh with Kyiv... I don't think it is Ukraine... deciding direction nor it's location.
Instead of an uninhabited city in Don... Kyiv would have met exactly the same fate... reduced to rubble.

In short, it is Russia that is deciding which front to keep alive and which simmering. I'm reminded of Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and parallels to this war... essentially both sides are expending resources, west with the benefit of Ukrainian territory and manpower, as it was then...
It all boils down to how long either can sustain and at what cost.

In past few decades Russia had let the dominoes fall, In Europe and MENA, putting only its foot down in Syria in maintaining that regime. It is flip side of that conflict in many ways it seems...
and desire thus in west to maintain the regime in Ukraine intact... and how far it will go? If the lines crumble will boots be deployed? If yes, Which line, territory or cities a la Syria be marked out of Russian advance...

Soviet collapse, then, didn't bare the full scope of it's fallout. That Russia will be fighting wars on it's very borders, with former Soviet republics and on western dime. Which is why the response could be so dire and very unpredictable... threatened, destabilized and cornered enough that it chooses to unleash its most destructive possessions.

Even with these 75.000 training up elsewhere. ukraine had managed to stop russias winter offensive.

So no. Its not an all or nothing gamble.

If it fails it will more likely lead to frontlines stabilizing as they are. With attrition continuing for both but both sides not dominant enough to break through.
It will become a matter of who has the longest reserves/endurance.

That didn't make sense, they enter a place 200 meters away from the place they said they had entered??
