Serbia had Vietnam war era SAMs, and in nowhere comparable quantity to what both Ukraine and Russia field.

Iraq similarly had fought with 1st and 2nd generation SAMs at most. Syria had 2nd gen SAMs, but like only 2 batteries, which were taken out by Israel at a first opportunity.

That vs.40-50+ SAM batteries on both sides of the war in Ukraine.

Now we see a situation where close range SAMs are getting depleted on both sides, and long range S300PS on both sides are trying to take up their duties.

I would argue that Russia has no truly 4th generation SAM, but they indeed have the raw range leadership with their latest missiles, which were never manufactured in sufficient quantities. Most of what they shoot from their S300s these days is 5V55U missile.

Russia's most interesting missile is Russian-Korean S350, and the only one with 4th generation claim. Much smaller launches can pack whoping 12 missiles, with 100km+ range, more than enough to defend forces on the move from cheap PGM saturation attack.

When the Syrians had the SA6s in Bekaa valley when Israelis targeted them in the 80s, they were the cutting edge. S300s / SA10s are from early 80s.

I think it speaks more about the Russians then under equipping its allies with 3rd rate outdated tech is why each and everyone gets wiped out from air strikes (and in case of Israel continues to do so).

S300s have been in Syria but yet Israel has been choosing to strike where it pleases.

I will agree with you that the current era of Russian weapons may be more advanced, but neither is NATO going to attack with the platforms and stand-off weapons of 90s and 2000s either. No Stealth other than F117 was available then, and stand-off weapons were limited .

Ukraine is standing its ground with support much like Taliban stood its ground (granted with no sovereign nation support) or Iran did against Iraq. You don't get to decide who is dirty or clean. That is determined based on who wins and then the victor re-writes history.

Ukraine may have lost 30% of its equipment (and thats a big may) but Russian Black Fleet is worthless now and the Baltic Fleet is now surrounded by NATO countries: will never be able to leave port or come back to port. So how is that for outgunning the adversary when Baltic is now a NATO lake
