The Russian Navy has ordered a second batch of upgraded Ilyushin Il-38N 'May' maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) from Ilyushin, the company announced.
The company did not disclose how many aircraft would be upgraded in the second batch, although the upgrade of the first batch included five aircraft.
The Il-38N upgrade process includes new avionics for the aircraft and the replacement of the legacy search and targeting suite with the new Novella system. This system, stated to offer a major expansion in the aircraft's capabilities and greatly increased search efficiency, includes a new radar, imaging systems, magnetometer, electronics intelligence package, and a radio-acoustic system.
