LONDON: Russia could back Pakistan and turn on India if it continues to trade with the West as Moscow and Islamabad pledge to improve defence ties, it has been claimed in a report.

New Delhi has placed large orders with Vladimir Putin but has previously done so under the condition Russia does not sell certain arms to Pakistan, said the paper, adding that India’s 2016 £4.1 billion ($5.5 billion) S-400 surface-to-air missile deal was signed under these terms, said the report.

Express on Sunday quoted a Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank Pakistani expert as saying that Russia may continue to restrict the amount and type of weaponry offered to Pakistan but this stance could change if Indiacontinues purchasing equipment from the West.

James Hackett, defence analyst with the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think tank, added: “Russia is still very heavily invested in current and future Indian defence equipment. So in this context, because of India’s potential reaction, Russia would likely weigh carefully any decision to significantly deepen defence ties with Pakistan.”

The report claimed that Indian experts visited Pakistan to discuss aspects of bilateral ties between Islamabad and New Delhi to improve relations by reviving Track II diplomacy which involves the use of non-governmental contact to analyse possible solutions to tension and conflict.

The paper quoted a source as saying that the interactions between the two nuclear-armed states occurred between April 28 and April 30 in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.

Another source added according to the paper: “The two sides discussed all aspects of bilateral relations and agreed that all issues between the two countries should be resolved through talks.”

Kanwal Sibal, India’s former foreign secretary, emphasised such dialogue between the two countries has been strained in recent years. He stated: “Neemrana has had a tough time over the past few years. Both sides felt though that it was important to keep alive that tradition but I didn’t go because I don’t think it would yield significant results in the current circumstances.”

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Faisal, said: “India should walk the talk and refrain from provocative statements. Our armed forces practice restraint but have the capacity and are ever vigilant to give a befitting response to any threat to the motherland.”

And do what?
Pakistan already gets stuff from china anyways.

Pakistan can get systems like SU-35 & S-400 for which there are no comparable clones from China yet.

Also, could get RD-93 directly instead of through China. May even go for RD-33 if WS-13 is delayed. Get MRO facilities for engines. The opportunities are limitless.

.
Not surprising. Pakistani-Russian relations are overdue anyways

Putin is awaiting for the exit of Modi in 2019.
Negative. It's too late now. Russia wants a steadfast ally, not someone that changes sides merely based on change of government.

Siaana kawwa goon khata hay...and india has proven to be far to siaana for its own good. Ab to "dhobbi ka kutta na ghar ka na ghaat ka" waali baat hay india kay liyay...

Russia does not need any allies. They themselves are a major power and can handle things on their own. What Russia needs is Business/Money to power their technology & defenses. This is where countries like China, India, Pakistan etc. come in. Russia would sell equipment to all countries wherever they can.

You don't think he will win again?

There is no chance of BJP getting a majority in 2019. They may get 150-200 seats making them the single largest party. Modi is ruled out as PM in a coalition government. The question is who would be the acceptable leader in BJP a la Vajpayee? There is a good possibility that Congress would support a third front candidate for PM to keep BJP away from power.

Indo-Russain partnership is strategic enough to split Pakistan in 1971...we should not under estimate..!

Disagree

It was the sheer arrogance and selfishness of our own leaders that was enough to split the country in half even if Russia and india weren't even a part of the equations. With leaders like ones we had at the time, who needed enemies!?

Another title hit job by Times of Islamabad.

The article say petty much the opposite,; that is Russia is scared of annoying India and thus restricting weapon sales to Pakistan.

Indo-Russian equation is no longer the same.

Things started to go down south since Russia decided to sell RD-93 engines to China for use on JF-17 in May-2007. It dawned on India that it no longer has big enough Business with Russia to prevent Russian sales to Pakistan.

1)They have no money for su-35
2)If russia is stupid enough to sell them s-400 ,we can always try to get THAAD from USA.
3)RD-33 is nothing special whether they get it directly from russia or through china.

This changes nothing and is just a speculation.Pakistan is simply not lucrative enough vs india for weapons sales.

The reason was simple....there was limited compatibility between urdu/punjabi speaking west pakistan and bengali spealing east pakistan.

Its not soviet union of the pre 1991......

Language and culture are never an issue if due respect and honor is given. I can show you 3rd generation Bangladeshis on this very forum who still love Pakistan as their brainchild, their idea, their own country but have a sadness inside their hearts that the west Pakistanis never considered us as their own...during a cricket match between Pakistan and india, they still cheer for Pakistan and its been 50 years since their independence.

Anyways, back on topic.
