What's new

Russia Su-35 is officially on offer to India.

The reason for MMRCA is the TOT offset.. if it happens as India wants.. even if it happens 60-70% of what rfp says. (of course in worst case scenario). the chances are that the whole military manufacturing complex, the indigenous industry may attain a level which is far superior to present position. The quality parameters of Dassault is very strict as like most western nation defence manufacturing. The chance of maturing existing capabilities, advancing the technologies and upgrading the whole industry to meet higher standards benefits whom the most? The answer is very simple - the LCA project (MK2, MK3 and so on) and AMCA projects and FGFA project or whatever we undertake in future.

The question now is very simple..
Point 1
Should we undertake a path where invest in R&D and gradual upgradation of the military manufacturing complex as and when results of long gestated R&D comes..And attain the ability to manufacture 4.5 gen birds by our own means and ways? Should we ensure that our LCA MK1 have everything be radar jet engine every part wholly developed and produced in India? IF thats the asnwer than falling squadron numbers is not a concern a all.. And we then need to understand that we will be able to really become self capable and self reliant after a good period of time as we have undertaken the toughest path with highest probability of success.... This is the same path which every advanced nation manufacturing cutting edge technology had undertaken at some point of time - be it USA, Russia, France or anyone ...We are then looking at things where time frames are much longer bcz our target is self sufficiency and proper indegenisation.. Then cancel MMRCA and perhaps work out a very less workshare in FGFA and buy limited products off the shelf. Invest all the money saved in R&D in India only.

Point 2
IF we want a shortcut then we have to induct a advanced Fighter with credible TOT to ensure that cost we pay as premium is worth enough to spearhead the advancement and maturity of defence manufacturing complex thereby shortening the timeframes of attaining self reliance. If we focus on this then definitely chances of other projects maturity and higher percentages of indeginisation increases a lot. So the easiest choice upfront are choices like MMRCA and proper worksharing in FGFA project. Where in both we do things to attain a credible capability to manufacture 4.5G and 5G birds. Bear it in mind, LCA gives us ,manufacturing a 4G capability bird with limited indegenisation.. So progress must be made via Su30MKI and MMRCA to a proper 4.5+G bird and then advance it further to 5G. Or else if we talk of forwarding to 5G only then our base is not strong bcz Su30 MKI is a royalty based assembling cum manufacturing where TOT of critical tech is not there. If it was really there then you all could have seen a much better localisation in LCA project including Jet engine tech from the know how gained via MKI project.

So even if it cost a good fortune, we have to invest in MMRCA and FGFA with credible TOT/Workshare to delete the time consumed in attaining higher capability via ways of R&D alone as in point 1.

After all the value of time in finance is always in terms of money only ..

Su-35S(formerly Su-35BM) is the most recent and the most advanced of the Su-27 family. It has a all-metal structure, but unlike other Su-27 family fighters, it's comprised of titanium composites. As a result its airframe life is higher than the others. Its avionics is one of the best, and its radar is the best in the world in range. How does it compare with its cousin the successful Su-30MKI family comprising of Su-30MKI, Su-30MKM and Su-30MKA?

Below are the similarities between Su-30MKI and Su-35S:
12 Hard Points
8000kgs external ordinance
G-limit 9
Same Air-Air and Air-Ground weapons package
Has Thrust Vectoring
Can house external jammers and all varieties of pods.
Has inflight re-fueling
etc.. etc..

Differences:
Su-30MKI
-
Maximum internal fuel - 9,640kgs
Max Range(without mid-air refueling) - 3000kms
Max ceiling - 17.3km
Max Speed - Mach 1.9
Canards - Yes
Crew - 2
Max Afterburner Thrust - 12500kgf, Emergency Thrust - 12800kgf
External Fuel Tanks - No
Composites - Not in significant quantity.
Empty Weight - unknown. Estimated to be around 18400kgs.
Airframe life - 3,000hrs or 15 years(at 200 hours flight time each year)
Internal Jammer - No
RCS - unofficial estimate 11.5m2
Airbrake - Yes
Supercruise- No

Su-35S-
Maximum internal fuel - 11,500kgs
Max Range(without mid-air refueling, without external fuel tanks) - 3600kms
Max ceiling - 18km
Max Speed - Mach 2.25
Canards - No (since radar isn't heavy)
Crew - 1
Max Afterburner Thrust - 14500kgf(gives a massive boost to TWR compared to Su-30MKI)
External Fuel Tanks - Yes (can carry 2 drop tanks of 1400kgs fuel in each of them)
Composites - Yes. Extensive use of Titanium Alloys.
Empty Weight - Unknown. Estimated to be around 18800kgs.
Airframe life - 6,000hrs or 30 years(at 200 hours flight time each year)
Internal Jammer - Yes
RCS - unofficial estimate between 1-3m2
Airbrake - No. Powerful modified rudders act as Airbrakes.
Supercruise - Yes

Radar-
This deserves a separate mention. Because this is where the difference is at its max.
Su-30MKI has a N-011M BARS Radar
Transmitter peak power - 5kw

Transmitter average power - 1.2kw
Can Track- 15 Targets
Can Simultaneously Engage - 4 Targets
Max Detection for 5 sqm RCS - 140 km(Upgraded Radar with upgraded transmitter power, if any in service, its range is unknown.)

Su-35S has N-035 IRBIS-E. The most powerful Fighter Plane mounted X Band radar in the world. Specs are as follows.
Transmitter peak power - 20kw

Transmitter average power - 5kw
Can Track - 30 Targets
Can Simultaneously Engage - 8 Targets
Max Detection for 5 sqm RCS - 426 km
Max Detection for 3 sqm RCS - 375 km
